Fulton Science Academy
INNOVATION, EXCELLENCE, CHARACTER
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - August 29, 2016
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters of Fulton Science Academy:
It's hard to believe that we are now entering our fourth week of a wonderful new school year! While academics remain a top priority at FSAPS, we also care very much about developing students who have a strong sense of character and who give back to their community. It is for this reason that we have built monthly character development themes into our curriculum.
The FSAPS themes for September are caring and kindness. September is also Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Sadly, cancer remains a leading cause of death among children, yet less than four percent of funding is allocated towards finding a cure. We are told that many childhood cancer treatments have not changed since the mid 1970s. With many of our students considering careers in medicine and medical research, this issue matters to us.
To honor our monthly character development theme and support a local nonprofit charity, CURE, that focuses on childhood cancer research, FSAPS will launch a brand new "COINS FOR A CURE" fundraising initiative throughout the month of September.
Students will be encouraged to please bring in spare change between September 1-September 28. Collection jars will be on display, by grade, in the school.
Our goal is to raise at least $1,000 to support children's cancer research.
To incorporate practical math into this school wide campaign, different elementary classes will be tasked with counting the coins that are collected weekly. Tallies will be kept and announced. At the end of the month, whichever grade has raised the most money will earn rewards for their efforts.
We will conclude the campaign with a school-wide pep rally on September 29. During the rally, we will invite local media, watch a short video, present CURE with a check, and reflect on the changes that are made possible when children show kindness and caring towards others.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived...this is to have succeeded.”
Sincerely,
Kenan Sener
Principal
Student Spotlight - Meet Eleanor R!
Lights, camera, ACTION! Eleanor R is a fifth grader and second-year Mustang who is chasing dreams and shattering stereotypes. This self-proclaimed "science starlet" is also a working, on-camera actor, voiceover artist, and dancer. She has been working professionally since the age of six when she was first signed with an agent.
Eleanor does a lot of commercial work for companies like Kimberly Clark and Home Depot and most recently was cast in two different commercials airing on Cartoon Network (Yo-Kai Watch Gummies and TMNT 2: Out of the Shadows). She completed two short films over the summer and last week was booked to appear in a music video with the rapper, D.R.A.M.!
When asked why she chose FSA, Eleanor commented, "I really love all things science, but the main reason I chose this school is because everyone I met told me how much they loved going to school here." She said choosing her "favorite" part of FSA is hard, but she credits teachers and staff as being incredibly supportive and motivational. "The adults here all make learning fun and interesting; they are willing to help me out whenever I need it and support my acting and performing arts pursuits as well as my educational work here as a Mustang."
When not buried behind one of her academic books or googling new science facts on her IPad, Eleanor is often found doing voiceover work. For instance, she is the voice of Piper in a STEM-focused animated series called, "Alfa and Friends" a series that helps to teach children science concepts.
Eleanor has been dancing since the age of five and is currently a company member at "Dream Big Dance Company" where she takes ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern, and acrobatics. Last year, she won first place at the Applause Talent Dance Competition for her jazz solo.
As if all of these accomplishments aren't completely exhausting, Eleanor also fancies herself as a fan of CrossFit and filmmaking!
Eleanor, your sparkling smile is contagious to all who know and see you. In the words of Walt Disney, "If you can dream it, you can do it." On behalf of everyone here at FSAPS, we are so proud of you. May every one of your dreams come true...Your family here at Fulton Science Academy is here to support you every step of the way!

Register Now for GRANDPARENTS DAY Celebration on september 11
Our annual Grandparents Appreciation Luncheon is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 11. The purpose of this special program is three-fold:
- To honor grandparents;
- To give grandparents an opportunity to get more information about FSAPS;
- To help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance our elder generations offer.
If you wish to attend our special Grandparents Gathering, please send an e-mail to Mrs. Condon at rcondon@fultonscienceacademy.org by Thursday, September 8, 2016 and let us know how many will attend from your family so that we can plan accordingly.
And So It Begins...
What a fun week in eighth grade Georgia Studies! Mississipian Indians played “chunky.” Spanish and French explorers came to North America and travelled along the southeastern coast. The English moved in and built a settlement at Jamestown. If you don’t know about these important events in the human drama that is the story of Georgia, please ask your students. They do! :)
Students in Ms. Rodgers classroom developed and performed skits for a peer teaching exercise to illustrate how native peoples lived and how their societies changed over time. Students examined the point of contact between various European explorers and native peoples. Classes learned about the impact Europeans had on the earliest Americans. Now, the stage is set for the next act of the drama, the colonization of North America and the founding of the Georgia colony.
When learning becomes fun, everyone wins!
Uniform Policy Enforced
Common dress code violations include:
- Nonuniform jackets (all jackets worn in the classroom should only be uniform)
- Nonuniform pants
- High school students not wearing their oxford shirts
- Nonuniform shoes
A link to LandsEnd, our uniform supplier, is included at the bottom of this newsletter. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Number Sets are Fun!
In addition to sorting objects according a rule, children also practiced counting sets of 10 and counting by tens. As you can see, smiles were everywhere; the children loved the activities!
Kindergarten Friendship Fruit Salad
When it came time for Ms. Irshadullah to add her piece of fruit, she started to peel a rotten banana and add it to the fruit salad. (Naturally, the students stopped her.) Wisely, they told her that a rotten banana could ruin the taste of the fruit salad. They were correct!
Using the visual fruit salad classroom activity, Ms. Irshadullah explained to her students that any child who is mean, or does not follow directions, can have the same effect on others as a rotten banana would if it were added to the fruit salad. These negative behaviors can destroy the peace of a classroom and the friendships children have formed with one another.
We would like to thank Ms. Irshadullah for such a creative, hands-on classroom activity. The children absolutely loved it and watching them during the exercise was beautiful...just like the friendship fruit salad!
Crochet Club 3rd-5th Grade
Art Club 3rd-5th Grade
Third through fifth grade Art Club attendees will have a great time gaining extra experiences in art history and artistic media! Throughout the year, students will work on pieces over several weeks and create seasonal and thematic crafts as well.
During our first session, students gave input as far as what techniques and media they would most like to learn this year. Figure drawing, clay hand building, and painting with acrylics and water color were the students' top choices. Art Club students also agreed that they would love how to learn how to create a comic storyboard and develop basic cartooning skills.
We started out with a paper marbling lesson/activity just to get everyone excited about our upcoming projects and be able to jump into creating without too much prior knowledge needed. In just one short club period, students learned the Japanese marbling method, experimented with some techniques, and filled my drying rack with beautiful products!
Cafeteria News
Please Consider a Thermos to Keep Lunches Warm
Given our increase in enrollment, we kindly ask that if you send your child with a warm meal, you please use a thermos. Lunch periods last only 30 minutes and microwave use is very limited. By the time some children have warmed their meals, they have no time to actually eat. A thermos will keep their food warm and avoids the need to use a microwave.
A link to Thermos options is here.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Update on Student Email Accounts
This week, FSAPS announced some changes regarding student email addresses.
Middle school students will no longer be able to send or receive e-mails to addresses outside our school domain. Their school-assigned email address will only allow them to send electronic communications to students, faculty, or administrators who share a fultonscienceacademy.org email address.
High school students will be able to send or receive e-mails both inside and outside our school domain. We expect that our high school students will use this priviledge responsibly.
Safety and security are our paramount concerns. Parents are able (and even encouraged) to check your students' e-mail address anytime you wish. Passwords have already been shared with you. You can also ask your student for his/her password. All students are required to share their passwords with their parents.
Please also be advised that our school administration is always able to check student e-mail accounts when asked, or if necessary.
Through these e-mail addresses, students will be able to receive important school-related emails. Examples include our weekly school newsletter, daily announcements, daily FSA Connect e-mails, and communication from their teachers and fellow students in a much faster and more efficient manner.
Every new academic benefit like this one comes with responsibility. We are confident that our students will use these email addresses in a professional manner as they prepare for life and careers that reward hard work, responsibility and personal and professional accountability.
Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or comments.
Thank you for all you do to make Fulton Science Academy a success. We appreciate you greatly.
Register Now for a FSA Home Visit
At FSAPS, we embrace every opportunity to learn as much as we can about our students. One way we achieve this is through personalized home visits with interested families. This program is entirely voluntary but has been very favorably received by those who have participated in past years.
One parent sent the following thoughtful email to us that we wanted to share...
“Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to a time when schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children.”
Our teachers visit with interested families because they enjoy it, but research also shows that personalized interaction with a student’s family at his/her home can be a very effective way to help boost a child's academic and personal growth. We agree.
How Can You Schedule a Home Visit?
The process is actually very simple. Please send an e-mail to our home visit coordinator, Mrs. Unal, at junal@fultonscienceacademy.org. In that email, please provide three available dates for your child's home visit. We will get back to you and confirm a date. At least two teachers will attend home visits; specific names/subjects will be dependent upon teacher availability.
For any questions you have about this program, please send an e-mail to junal@fultonscienceacademy.org.
Please note: the best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 p.m., and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings.
MEDICAL UPDATE
If it is listed on the registration form that your child has asthma or allergies that require a medical device, you are required to provide that device to the front office immediately. All medicines and rescue devices (inhalers, epipens, etc.) will be locked in the administrative area. Students who have written medical orders to carry their devices with them at all times are able to do so, but an updated, 2016-2017 medical form must be on file with our front office.
As per the FSA Student Handbook, in an emergency situation, the school will phone 911 in any situation where we feel a child's health is in danger and professional medical intervention is necessary.
Please email rcondon@fultonscienceacademy.org if you would like a form sent home with your child. Please note all prescribed medicine forms do need to be signed by a physician.
Private Music Lessons Available - Register Now
FSAPS is very happy to offer private music lessons to students, teachers, and members of the administration. Although enrollment can be made throughout the year and fees can be pro-rated, spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and spots are filling quickly. For more information regarding private music lessons, please contact Melinda Hubbell at 770/402-2907 or email mhubbell@fultonscienceacademy.org. Thank you!
Dismissal Reminders
Please be informed that student pick-up is not allowed from the front office between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. All families are required to follow the dismissal instructions described HERE to pick up their children. If you miss our 3:30 p.m. dismissal, please wait until the 4:20 p.m. dismissal to pick up your child, our teachers prepare for clubs and ask that we do not interrupt them. We kindly request that any families who have doctor appointments or other commitments please plan to pick up your child from the front lobby prior to 3:00 p.m.

GREAT NEWS! INTRODUCING EARLY MORNING MUSIC AND CODING CLASSES
As part of our ongoing quest to make our school a leading STEAM institution in the region, we have been discussing ways to improve the music and computer/coding programs. We are pleased to report that as part of our school improvement plan for the 2016 - 2017 school year, we will now offer early morning music and coding classes. To best support this new initiative, we have added two additional faculty members to our school. These talented staff members include our new orchestra teacher, Dr. Hawk, and our new computer teacher, Ms. Ertekin.
Early morning classes are offered to students in grades five or higher (on an optional basis) and are held between 7:15 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. Thanks to these early morning classes, students will now have the option to take additional classes in the areas of either band/orchestra and/or coding classes before our regular school day begins. We are proud to offer these optional music and coding classes, as they should give an extra “boost” to our already extensive course curriculum.
Please note that while the music classes are open to any student in 5th grade or higher, the coding classes are only open to students in 6th grade through 8th grade.
Students may choose one day of music and two days of coding classes. These optional classes will begin on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CLASSES
- Students should be in the classroom no later than 7:15 a.m. Students will not be allowed to enter into classroom after 7:20 a.m. because it would be disruptive to the learning process.
- Please note that the teachers reserve the right to remove any student who misses more than three classes in any semester.
If your child is interested in registering for these optional music and/or coding classes, please CLICK HERE to register.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE PROGRAM
We value the feedback of our FSA families and, as such, are pleased to announce some changes with our before and after school care, including a new discounted monthly payment plan that we think may interest you.
As you know, fees for our regular before and after school care are as follows:
- Before School Care is available every weekday between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. for $5 per day
- After School Care is available every weekday between 3:30 and 6:00 p.m. for $15 per day
We will have after school club options for each weekday this year. Those who do not attend a club can stay in after school care beginning at 3:30 p,m. For those who are enrolled in a club, the after school care program will begin at 4:30 p,m.
This year, we are pleased to announce new discounted fees that are associated with payment plan. Those fees are as follows:
- Monthly Payment Plan for Before School Care - $50 per student (A savings of about $50 per month)
- Monthly Payment Plan for After School Care - $200 per student (A savings of about $100 per month)
- Additionally, there will be 10% before and after school care discount for the siblings when they register for the monthly payment plan.
For those students who regularly use before or after school care, we recommend the monthly payment plan to save money. Once you register, you will be sent invoices at the end of each month between the months of August and May. If interested, please visit the link below and submit.
If your family is not interested in a monthly registration, you do not need to do anything. You will be charged, per day, as you use these services.
SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
How do I get started?
Simply log onto http://www.apogee123.org.
