Principal’s Message - April 16, 2021
M-STEP Testing – Starting Monday, April 26th, our 3rd graders will be taking the M-STEP Assessment on Chromebook computers. Our third graders will be assessed in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. Recently, with teacher guidance, our students have been working on the M-STEP Practice Tests to better acclimate themselves with particular test features and how to maneuver the online tools.
These assessments will help schools with determining how well children are comprehending varying subjects. With this information, we can see if the methodologies and approaches that we are using are successful or need changes for the betterment of each child. All tests will begin approximately at 10:30. The tests are all different in length, but students are given as much time as they need to finish. The dates of these tests are:
Monday, April 26th (ELA)
Tuesday, April 27th (ELA)
Thursday, April 29th (Math)
Friday, April 30th (Math)
How can you prepare your child for these tests? Please make sure that your children are in bed a little earlier and eating a healthy breakfast the days of testing. Also, please don’t plan on taking your children out of school on the morning of the testing. The following lists a couple of strategies that can actually help with taking tests.
“Test Taking Tips”
Multiple Choice:
1) Read the whole question before making a choice
2) Eliminate the choices that you know are wrong. Try the rest to see which one makes the most sense.
3) Check to make sure each answer is next to the right number or letter.
True – False:
1) Read each sentence carefully
2) If you don’t know the answer, guess. Hint: There are usually more true answers than false.
3) On a True-False test, your first answer is often correct. So, it’s best not to change it
Matching:
1) Do the easiest matches first and then tackle the tougher ones.
2) Ask the teacher if all or only some of the matching choices will be used.
3) If you’re not sure, take a guess. An empty blank will never be correct.
Sincerely,
Jack Yates

It is hard to believe that it is already time to begin the process of placing students with teachers for the 2021/22 school year. Although teacher styles may differ from teacher to teacher, the content of the curriculum remains the same within the grade level. A great deal of time and effort is given to grouping children into classes. Our primary concern is to establish productive, balanced classrooms where each child has the opportunity to be successful and is challenged to do their best.
If you feel you have compelling information to contribute to the placement decision, our Placement Consideration Forms are available in a Red labeled folder that can be found on the table outside by the main office doors.
Please complete the form and submit it to the main office by Friday, May 7th, 2021.
This additional information will help assist us in the construction of balanced classrooms.
Please remember that requests for a specific teacher cannot be honored.
Sincerely, Jack Yates
Hornung Elementary Principal

Counselor Corner
Flowers are blooming and it is giving us all the summer feels! The sunshine has such a powerful effect on our spirit and energy. I hope you are finding time as a family to enjoy it all! This month in counseling we will focus on problem solving. This could look like reading through scenarios and talking about possible avenues or solutions to problems as well as practicing the use of sentence starters that give students a framework to pull from when communicating with others. When we use effective problem solving, we acknowledge alternative perspectives, respect one another’s emotions, and overall have more successful relationships.
Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school. More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home! Important Reminder
Reminder that students should not be playing on the playground before school starts. We have no adult supervision before school on the playground so it is not safe.
Also, only Hornung students can be on the playground during school hours up until Friendship Center dismissal at 5:30 pm.
