VCS East Hawk Talk

October 2020

Big picture

October Count is Thursday, 10/1!

What is October Count?

The State of Colorado uses the October Count process to determine the amount of funding a school will receive based on enrollment numbers.

When is October Count?

The October Count Window is from September 24-October 8, 2020. This is a two week period in which we are required to account for student attendance. The most important day of the window is Thursday, October 1, 2020, which is Count Day.

October 1, 2020

On Thursday, October 1, 2020, every student must log on to their homeroom/advisory on time in order to be counted. It is very important that we have all students present. Teachers are offering incentives, and the Leadership Team has challenged teachers to compete for the highest attendance rate. Those classes will receive a surprise from the Leadership Team. If the whole school turns up, we all win!

Cohort Assignments

Today, families received their child's cohort assignments. Please click the link below for the hybrid calendar. If you have any questions, contact your child's teacher. If you've changed your mind and would like to stay remote, email us at so we can update our records.

Reminder: If you've chosen the hybrid option, you're welcome to switch to the remote option at any time. If you start the quarter in the remote option, but want to switch to they hybrid option, you must wait until the start of the 3rd quarter to do so. Thank you for understanding.

Hybrid Calendar

Starting 10/19, Kindergarten-12th grade students will be on the same calendar.

We're excited to have a new system for afternoon pick up that will also allow us to safely dismiss our students! You've been hearing about PikMyKid for some time, now, and we'll be utilizing this platform as soon as we return to the building on 10/19. Please download the app on your devices, and the system will walk you through registration. If you run into any problems getting into the program, email us at, and we'll get things resolved in a timely manner.

Masks & Social Distancing

In order for VCS to open its doors safely, all humans entering the buildings are required to wear masks and practice social distancing. VCS has purchased masks for every student and staff member, and the school has extras on hand should students misplace, forget, or break their masks. Students and staff are expected to remain 6 ft or greater apart at all times.

The following steps will be taken should these safety measures be violated:

  • 1st time: school personnel engage in conversation with student about health requirements
  • 2nd time: an assistant principal will contact parents/guardians and send electronic communication to include health requirements
  • 3rd time: an assistant principal will call and document communication with family, agreement to comply, and acknowledgement that failure to comply will result in student moving to full remote learning
  • 4th time: student will learn remotely

Medications at School

If medication will be administered at school for your child, you must fill out a new medication form. Please contact Nurse Katie Buckman at for more information.

How Sick is too Sick?!

DO NOT send your child to school if they are experiencing ANY COVID-19 symptoms. Please also know that your child will be sent home if their temperature is 100* or greater...NO EXCEPTIONS.

Family/Teacher Conferences

Please note: Conferences have been moved from October to November. Teachers will send invitations to sign up for appointments closer to 11/19.

Core Virtue of the Month

Self-Control and Self-Discipline

October brings a new start with hybrid learning, a new quarter in school and an elevated opportunity to build on the foundation we have laid in the first months of school. This month we will urge our students to push themselves--to move beyond the "comfortable" and embrace new and challenging opportunities. By October, academic work is starting to be more difficult. Even for the most dedicated students, all the new challenges this month will call for increased dedication.

  • Self-control is stopping to think about my actions before I enact them!
  • Self-discipline is applying ourselves to our tasks and giving the best of ourselves. Saying "no" to our weaknesses.

Please make sure to call the front desk at 303-338-4110 when your child will be or has been absent from class. You will receive an automated phone call in the evening if your child was absent from any classes throughout the day if you do not call in to notify us of the absence. You may email teachers to get make up work, but call the front desk, as well.
