A Message from Dr. Bearden...
I hope that this summer edition of Hilltop Happenings finds you well and enjoying the slower pace of summer! While the school year did not end the way we wanted and how we start the year is still undecided, we are so very excited about August, 2020 and welcoming all of our families back to the Hill!! The next edition of Hilltop Happening Summer edition will be Friday, June 19th and will include information from the 6/18 FCS School Board Meeting.
Before I go further, I want to acknowledge the tragic and senseless deaths of unarmed black men, women, and children, as well as many social injustices felt by many in our community, our state, and around the nation. The range of emotions, feelings, commentaries, and video from all over America often leaves me unable to find adequate words to express my heartfelt compassion and sympathy to any, who have been personally impacted by this or any other tragedies and/or injustices like these.
Whether any of us have personally experienced racism or not, as a parent and your principal, it is important to me that each one of you know of my commitment to always stand against racism, against hate, against classism, against any type of abuse/neglect/mistreatment, and/or against legal/social injustices for any human being, but especially for children. My life's work centers around ensuring that ALL children regardless of ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, age, etc. feel safe, loved, protected, and equal in all eyes. As a guardian of children, I have and always will fight for each and every one. Period!
Recently, I have heard one of my favorite quotes being used often because it uplifts and gives us hope!
"Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world."
Nelson Mandela
The quote has always reminded me of the important societal microculture that is "school". For decades, where children attend school as well as their teachers are often powerful catalysts for shaping the success or lack thereof for so many children. As an educator, I seek to a be part of the reason for every child to reach his/her own unique potential for success in life and therefore read, research, and/or listen to best practices for educators. The pandemic, recent national events, and the uncertainty of our immediate future, have further compelled me to learn more, to love more, and to consistently lead with "What's Best for Children" at the forefront of every decision. Thank you for your trust and for your commitment to Summit Hill.
Since early March, this pandemic has changed a lot of our societal "norms" and forced us to evolve quickly into living with quarantine, face masks, and social distancing for the health and safety of us all. I will use the summer version of Hilltop Happenings to keep you informed of how school will open as well as up to date as possible on any changes made to our typical events, which occur with a new school year.
Although how school will open has yet to be determined, there is a great deal of summer planning and CDC guidelines are being watched closely. Optimistically, we are hoping and preparing for best case scenario: children attending school come Monday, August 10th. However, plans B and C are also being discussed and planned carefully. Furthermore, even if we start school face-to-face, there will have to be modifications to large group routines to ensure the health and safety for our students, staff, and community.
Each week in the Hilltop Happening, I will include most recent information, important dates, and overviews leading up to the start of school.
While I am truly hoping that the last 12-weeks have not permanently altered all of our "school norms", I am committed to the welfare and safety of children and will do whatever is necessary to maintain a safe, healthy, and well-rounded experience for them.
