Adult and Community Education
"In The Know" 12/6/16
A Message from the Leadership Team
Adult Education
COABE (Commission on Adult Basic Education) is hosting its national conference in early 2017 in Orlando, Florida. More than 2,000 attendees, from across the United States, will enjoy presentations and break-out sessions focused on best practices and targeted training. The sessions are designed to allow attendees an opportunity to dig deep into one specific topic. The sessions, presented by nationally known speakers and education experts, are structured to: include content that is research-based; share best practices; and provide proven “how to” strategies.
We are extremely proud that four of our own education experts have been selected: Khris Betten-Jutasi "Tomorrowland- The Changing Classroom- removing walls for our students", Dr. Leo Mediavilla "The 7 Habits on the Inside: Reducing Recidivism Through Behavioral Change", and Dr. Marie Coleman "Breakout EDU - It’s Time for Something Different". After submitting their proposals to COABE through an arduous selection process and review of hundreds of proposals, COABE notified each presenter that he/she had been selected. One of the major goals of the conference is to provide valuable, state-of-the-art training that conferees will then bring back to their adult ed programs to help improve their practices. We are fortunate to have such knowledgeable and talented people in our program! Congratulations Marie, Leo, Khris and Scott.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES FROM BARBARA BELKOFF
Community organizations are a great place to find helpful resources, places that can help us with sometimes difficult situations. Community organizations depend on volunteers to help provide those resources. ONE of the very real ways to become part of a community is to become a volunteer within that community. You interact, speak and assist those living in your own backyard. Volunteering is a great way to practice our skills and also can be a great way to look for future employment.
So on a weekly basis I will share volunteer opportunities in Collier County.
Assist the Cancer Alliance of Naples at the reception desk greeting visitors and answering the phones. Also help with putting together their information to be mailed and aid in data entry. Lots of opportunity to increase your English-speaking skills and assist with interpretation for people who do not speak English.
This organization raises money to help people needing financial support with rent, utilities and other items while battling cancer, either for them or family members. They offer free counseling, nutrition programs and run a library available to the entire community.
