ALICE - Student Participation Drill - Tomorrow
Dear Nature Hill Families,
On Thursday, October 11, Nature Hill Intermediate will execute its second ALICE safety drill of the 2018-2019 school year. The Oconomowoc Area School District (OASD) follows a safety protocol called ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate). This training encourages staff and students to respond to an armed intruder based on the situation, rather than rely on centralized instructions in dynamic times of crisis.
Earlier this school year, staff reviewed with students the ALICE safety protocol and the location of our three rally points. We also practiced lockdown/barricading classrooms. Our drill on October 11 is an emergency-armed intruder practice drill. During this intensive drill, local law enforcement and individuals from our district Building and Grounds Department will be on-hand to help monitor all exercises.
The purpose of the emergency-armed intruder practice drills is to provide students and staff the opportunity to practice making a well- informed decision if an unsafe and unexpected situation were to happen at school.
Before this intensive drill with students is held, teachers will hold age-appropriate discussions
on:
• what will take place during the training
• how to calmly complete the exercise
• the expectations for remaining orderly throughout the drill
Also, as a parent or guardian, you will receive a ‘drill-in-progress’ communication from the school district that will be sent to the email address on file in Skyward Family Access, while this drill is taking place. Please note, this will only be a test communication letting you know that a drill is in progress.
District staff and students will spend time practicing:
• How to be flexible in their response to an emergency, based on the information available
• How to feel empowered in deciding the safest response, based on the information available
• How to communicate with each other and alert one another in an emergency
Movement of staff and students to school designated rally points will wrap up this training. These locations are the designated areas for staff and students to meet in the case of a school emergency. Evacuation to a safe, designated area away from our school building ensures that staff and students are out of harm's way. Our primary goal is to ensure the safety of our students and staff while taking a proactive approach if an unsafe person were to enter any of our district buildings.
Be sure to follow the Oconomowoc Area School District’s social media channels (Facebook:
@oconomowocschools, Twitter: @oconschools, and Instagram: oconomowocschools), along with the news updates on the district website at www.oasd.org. In the event of an emergency, these platforms will be used to share information and updates about the situation with families and the community.
If you have any questions or concerns about our drill or other emergency response procedures, please contact me at 262-560-4941 or email me at olsonc@oasd.org.
Sincerely,
Chuck Olson, NHI Principal
