A Message from the Vice President for Student Affairs, Cedric Gathings
Dear Families,
It is hard to believe we are over halfway through the fall 2017 semester! We had a great Homecoming and Parent & Family Weekend and are excited to see you all next year! It has been a busy semester and there are more great things to come. The Division of Student Affairs will continue to host a variety of events this semester and to keep up-to-date, follow us on twitter @mustudentaff. Here at Marshall, the Division of Student Affairs is dedicated to our students' success and I want to let you know a little of what we can do to make our Sons and Daughters of Marshall Successful. This month I am going to focus on Student Advocacy & Success and how we can work together!
The Office of Student Advocacy & Success is dedicated to helping our students find their voice and utilize all of the outstanding resources Marshall University & the Huntington community have to offer. The halfway point of the semester is the time when students realize they do need to utilize the resources whether it is getting connected with a tutor, the Writing Center, or they are struggling with time management. The Office of Student Advocacy & Success will work with your student to ensure they have the resources needed. Visit the website for contact information and an overview of the office. http://www.marshall.edu/student-affairs/advocacy/.
Again, our student’s academic and social success is our priority and Student Affairs is available to work with you and your student.
Go Herd!

Dr. Kateryna Schray: Student Affairs Outstanding Faculty Partner October 2017
Cedric Gathings, our Vice President for Student Affairs said he was thrilled to present Dr. Schray with this award.
"The dedication and support she provides our students demonstrates her commitment to their academic excellence," he said. "She understands the importance of a strong partnership between academic affairs and student affairs."
Dr. Schray earned her Ph.D. in Medieval Literature from the University of North Carolina in 1997. She received her bachelor’s degree from La Salle University and her master’s from Georgetown University. She was named the Marshall University Charles E. Hedrick Outstanding Faculty Award Recipient for 2012-13, and was the keynote speaker at the university’s Winter Commencement last December. She also received the Pickens-Queen Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001 and the Reynolds Outstanding Teaching Award in 2009.
We in Student Affairs look forward to the great work by Dr. Schray and all of our Herd Path Partners.
Featured Family - The Higgins Family
While making her college selection, Jordan felt welcomed at Marshall by the friendly, caring atmosphere of the campus. Add to that the status of her major, #1 in the country in digital forensics, and Marshall was exactly what the Higgins crew were looking for.
The Higgins have always been a supportive family for Jordan and her two sisters. During their time in various athletic programs, the three siblings have worked hard to show each other the care and support known in their family, staying positive and working together to get through life's obstacles. It was this care that brought this #MarshallUFamily to Parent and Family Weekend and this familial love that makes them our Featured Family.
5 Tips to Help Students Get the Most of Their Academic Advising Appointment
1. Schedule an appointment. Students should have had their advising appointment before fall break.
2. Show up a few minutes early. Advisors are very busy during advising season and showing up a few minutes early shows respect and can also help students get the most of their time.
3. Do research. Students can go into their myMU to look at classes to add or go to www.marshall.edu/registrar to see the classes available for Spring 2018.
4. Be prepared. Come with a list of classes to discuss with their advisor. Utilize Degree Works which has a check list
5. Ask questions! We want our students to get the most of their education and advising appointments. Students should ask questions about the classes they will be taking to make sure they are successful.
