Empower All People to be Healthy, Lifelong Learners
Kia kaha - do your best * Kia māia - be courageous * Kia manawanui - have a heart
Ko Puketapu Matou
The mountain shape at the top is instantly recognisable as our Maunga Taranaki - it is the view from our school field.
The circle and the small and large person represents our community and our manaakitanga - the care and support between young and old, working and learning together.
Our vision underpins it all: Empower All People to be Healthy, Lifelong Learners.
Teacher Only Day - This Friday, 8 March
We are all akonga and this Friday there is no school for children as the staff of Puketapu have a school trip of their own.
When I asked the kids, "what are the staff up to on Friday" these were two of the responses:
"They are going to a party"
"They are going away to learn some stuff"
While we are not going to a party, we are going to have fun together and continue to build upon our culture as a team of teachers. We have seven new staff this year and we want to get to know each other more outside of school so that when the going gets tough we have each others back and function to a high level as a team.
The 'learn some stuff' will be done at Riverdale School and Manukura School. We will be focusing on our vision of 'empowering all people to be healthy lifelong learners' and these two schools do this in different ways that we want to observe and learn from, and then implement in our Puketapu way at our kura.
Here are the two schools we are looking at:
Riverdale School
Riverdale School has a similar vision to Puketapu - "Empowering Successful Inquiring Learners" - is a similar size to us and has collaborative learning and flexible learning environments.
Manukura
Manukura is a designated special character school of high performance sport and academics. Based at Massey University (Kura Awa buildings) catering to students from Years 9-13.
Manukura provides a full 'wrap around' service, including nutrition, exercise prescription and coaching inclusive of individualised academic plans.
We are looking forward to our learning camp as a staff and we will do our best to continue to be the best team of teachers for our akonga at our school.
Kauri
Thank you to all the adults who came along to help make this possible.
Kauri Overnighter wrap up 2019
On Thursday 28th of February we packed our stuff ready to camp out on the field.
The first activity we needed to do was set up our tent. Some of us struggled to set up our tents. Other groups helped us out as the teachers stood and watched!!
When we finished setting up our tents we hopped on our bikes and scooters and rode to East End beach.
When we arrived to East End beach we had to put our bikes and scooters away and sat down and ate our lunch. Next we got into groups and started doing beach challenges. The challenges were flags, beach sprint, sand castles and blindfold obstacle course. My favourite challenge was the blindfold obstacle course. It was very fun.
The team with the most points wins but we never got told who won then we got ready for a swim. It was very hot at first but when we got our feet in the water it was very cold.
When we were finished swimming we got changed in to our clothes and called the roll, getting ready to go back to school and cook our dinner. Off we went to school.
Once we got to school most bikers had sore bottoms and sore legs from sitting down on the bike and the scooter riders had sore legs from pushing against the ground.

Kia Ora Puketapu Whanau!
We are back cooking this week, this time we have been asked to cater for a education group Hui at Muru Raupatu Marae.
Planning a menu for 20 people has been challenging, but a good learning experience. The students this week will all play a part in preparing the food.
Thanks also for everyone who brought in vegetables from your gardens, I really appreciate the donation of carrots, cucumbers, lettuce and many millions of tomatoes! I had 3 students today chopping and chopping tomatoes to make a pasta sauce for the chicken dish we will make on Thursday.
Today we made Crispy Cheese Squares and Chocolate chip cookies, see the recipes below.
