Welcome back scholars and learning coaches! We truly hope everyone enjoyed the winter holiday season and some well deserved time off. We are very excited for 2019 and have many several special events planned for the rest of the school year.
As a reminder, this is the final month of Semester 1. Let's end the semester strong!

CCS NEWS ~ January is National School Board Recognition Month and Compass Charter Schools (CCS) is celebrating its community volunteers who dedicate countless hours and resources to ensure quality education is available for scholars. Read the full press release.
ENERGY BUS ~ Energy Bus tip of the week: Take a moment to let your teachers and classmates know you appreciate them! Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Make a Difference Monday Message from the Energy Bus, provided by J.J. Lewis, our Superintendent & CEO! Create your own one word and share on social media, tagging both @CompassCS and @EnergyBusSchool. AND as we start 2019, consider completing this Positive Vision Planning Sheet!
GEOGRAPHY BEE ~ We will be hosting the Geo Bee at our Orange County Learning Center (OCLC) in Santa Ana on Thursday, January 24. All 4th-8th graders are invited to participate. The Geo Bee will begin at 1:15 pm in the Parish Hall. Click here for study information.
PHOTO CONTEST ~ CCS has entered a photo contest organized by our insurance carrier, Nonprofits Insurance Alliance! Find our photo entry here and be sure to vote once each day this week, between January 7-11!
SCHOLAR LEADERSHIP COUNCIL SURVEY ~ As a reminder, the Scholar Leadership Council needs your help! We want to under the best ways to serve our fellow scholars, and ask that you complete this short survey to share your feedback.Please complete the survey by this Wednesday, January 9.

SPELLING BEE ~ We will be hosting the Scripps National Spelling Bee at our OCLC next Tuesday, January 15. TK-5 will have preliminary rounds starting at 11 am in the cave of wonders; 6-8th graders and finalists from first round will begin at 1:15 pm in the Parish Hall. Click here for word lists.
K-8 SCHOOL NEWS
MISS D.’S SUCCESS TIP OF THE WEEK ~ Start the New Year off right by making sure your scholar is nice and organized! Use a daily planner to structure work days, clean off your scholar’s workspace so it’s clutter-free, and take a look at what’s due at the beginning of each week and create a plan of action with your scholar so they’re successful!
MUSIC LESSON ~ Miss Noller will be holding a Virtual
Music Lesson Workshop about the instruments in the orchestra geared towards elementary age scholars, but all ages would be welcome! Join the fun this Friday, January 11 at 1:00 pm in the Music Room!
ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
AVID ~ As the end of the semester approaches, scholars and learning coaches will want to make sure fundamental support systems are in place. By ensuring basic support systems such as work area, daily routines, and goals are understood, scholars will be able to focus on their current learning objectives. Consider the following questions, and take a look at this checklist to make sure these fundamental areas are being used as effectively as possible:
-Where is the designated study area?
-Is this area kept tidy and free of distractions?
-What is the expected daily routine?
-Does this routine keep the course pace and avoid late assignments?
END OF SEMESTER REMINDER ~ The last day for scholars to submit work for semester 1 is January 30 at 11:59 pm. If your scholar is behind and needs help creating a catch up plan or schedule, please reach out to individual teachers as soon as possible.
POETRY OUT LOUD ~ The deadline for submissions to our Poetry Out Loud Contest is tomorrow, Tuesday, January 8. For more information, please contact Mrs. Jennings at jjennings@compasscharters.org.
SCIENCE WET LABS ~ If your scholar has not attended a Science Wet Lab this semester for physical science, biology, chemistry, or physics, we are offering a makeup lab this Friday, January 7 in the Los Angeles and Lake Elsinore areas. Please RSVP to attend the final lab for semester 1!
COUNSELING SERVICES
ACT REGISTRATION DEADLINE APPROACHING
Juniors, the registration deadline for the February ACT exam is this Friday, January 11! You can find more information about the ACT and the registration at www.act.org. If you are in need of a fee waiver, contact Ms. Olson at molson@compasscharters.org.
FREE CASH FOR COLLEGE WORKSHOPS ~ Through the March 2 Cal Grant deadline, scholars and families can attend FREE Cash for College Workshops across California for help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act (CADAA) and Chafee Grant for Foster Youth applications.
RACE TO SUBMIT ~ The California Student Aid Commission presents the Race to Submit Initiative, which encourages eligible high school scholars to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). Filling out these financial aid applications is the first step towards college success and helps scholars qualify for federal and state aid to help pay for college.
