Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 3rd December 2021
Mr Wallace Our Headteacher for a day!
My day as headteacher
First we went outside and squirted the children with sanitiser before they went into school. Next I closed the gates to make sure no children could get out. I also checked that all the doors were locked.
After a drink and a biscuit, Mrs Denney the Chairs of Governors came to see me. I took her around the school to see what all the children were doing. She was very happy with what she saw. We talked in my office all about what governors do and what I would be doing that day.
After I showed Mrs Denney out I prepared my Zoom worship. As it was money day we did a worship where children had to guess prices of toys and add them all together to get a total. The closest price won a special Cathedral Star pencil.
Then I went outside on Playground Duty. Lots of children asked me lots of questions, such as what it is like to be headteacher for the day. At the end of playtime I rang the bell and said that the children could have 5 extra minutes of break.
I had another drink and biscuit before giving the pencil prizes out in Year 3.
I then prepared a staff meeting and training for teachers about needing more jokes around school. I asked children about the number of jokes that they heard in class. Year 4 and Year 6 had no jokes, Year 3 and Year 5 were better but needed improvement.
I visited classrooms to give out Headteacher Awards before having lunch in my office with some of Year 3.
After lunch I emailed staff to tell them they had an emergency meeting and I provided training so that they know how to tell jokes. I also gave them some targets.
At the end of the day I opened the gates and said goodbye to the children as they left.
It has been great fun being Headteacher for the day.

Year 1 - Our own strengths
In Year 1, we looked at what our strengths are and how these can be used to help us with a job when we are older. We read the story ‘Happy I’m a Hippo’. This story taught us that we all have our own strengths and it’s ok to be different. We talked about some of our strengths in Year 1 and have created a class tree using hand-prints. On each hand, the children have written their name on the palm and 5 strengths along each finger. We then learnt all about different jobs people have in the community. The children worked together to think about what strengths people would need for these. We began to think about jobs we would like in the future and why these would be suitable for us based on our individual strengths.
Reception - Learning about Occupations

COVID Update
PCR Testing
As I am sure you are aware, we have made changes to our risk assessments due to the Omicorn variant. We do continue to ask that if your child has symptoms, including cold symptoms that are typical of the Delta variant that you do access a PCR test (needs to be booked online). Symptoms of the Omicron variant are reported as a cough, fatigue and a headache. There is a mobile test centre that is in Ripon every Wednesday with results provided often in less than 24 hours.
Close Contacts
If you have a case of COVID in your immediate family, as close contacts, we do ask that you access a PCR test for your child. Please do not send your child back into school until the outcome is known, even if they are asymptomatic. If you are unsure about what you should do contact NHS 111 or do call school to discuss your situation.
Nativity
We are hopeful that our Nativity will be a live event with children and parents in attendance. We are following DFE guidance carefully as well as working with the Cathedral to make this event as safe as possible. As such, we may need to limit attendance and require face coverings to be worn. We will update you with the arrangements in our next newsletter.
Thank you for your understanding.
What is the difference between human teeth and kitten teeth?
Year 4 have been learning about the different types of teeth and their function. They have been comparing their teeth to those of other animals. What are the differences between human teeth and kitten teeth? They had a look at some real kitten teeth and were able to describe them and explain why they are much pointier than our teeth. Why is that? They have been using some technical vocabulary, such as carnivore, herbivore, molar, canine and incisor. Well done Year 4!
