Mrs. Hawker's Newlsetter

Notes from Mrs. Hawker
- I can't believe that the 1st quarter is complete! This year is really flying by! Thank you for all of the support you give to your child's education both inside and outside the school walls.
- With our amazing digital learning initiative, your child has had opportunities for learning that most school districts can only dream of! Watching your children become accustomed to the iPad and seeing them use it to maximize their learning is such a great sight!
- Grades can be viewed this evening! Please take time and have your child log in to Power School to share his/her progress! Please remember that your child's learning is developmental and seeing "2's" on the report card is NOT a bad thing! It means that your child is starting to grasp the concept and is working towards the "3"- 4th grade concepts start to get difficult and your children are working very hard!
- Please vote for Bay Port for PROJECT INNOVATE! We're in 5th place and need to get into 1st for the wifi-grant!! Anyone 13 and older can vote! CLICK HERE!
What's Up in the Classroom?
Reading - We have been working hard on comprehension this week. Students are reading fiction and nonfiction stories and answering different types of comprehension questions that are within the text, beyond the text and about the text.
Writing - We have been working on a Thanksgiving themed piece! Check our hallway display next week to see your child's published work! Next week we will dive into persuasive writing. Students will write basic paragraphs that include a solid opinion about the topic, a reason why they believe this, an explanation of the reason and a wrap up sentence restating the opinion.
Math - Students will be taking their division test at the end of next week. They are expected to divide 4 digits by 1 digit, write equations to represent the word problems and interpret remainders.
Science - Static electricity is going well. Students have learned about the parts of an atom. They've also learned about the charges that go along with the different atom parts.
Spelling - Next week we will complete another spelling inventory (25 words) and will be adjusting our spelling groups as needed. Students will have a chance to do the inventory every quarter to show their growth.
Holiday Concert
It's hard to believe that it's already that time of year again! Our new music teacher has been working hard to get the students ready for their holiday concert. Students had a note with them yesterday informing you of the dates. Our class is Thursday, December 4th at 7:30. Students are asked to bring a dozen cookies for the cookie social that will take place after the concert!!
