6th Grade Wolverine Weekly

Week of September 28th - October 2nd

College and Career Studies ~ Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Dickerson, and Mr. Thames

This week in CCS we are starting a PBL on the Healthcare Career cluster and will be having our very own nurse, Brittany Shields, as a guest speaker. We will be examining the growing need to fill a wide variety of jobs within the cluster in the coming years by studying census data and making projections for the future.

Pre-AP Science ~ Mrs. Goulding

This week will be the first for the 2nd Six Weeks and in Science we will continue working on our SSEP projects. Students should have a testable question, a purpose for why they want to know and how it will matter to understand the concept, list of materials needed and most of their initial research ready to go. In addition to this, our learning target is that we will be able to describe the physical properties, locations and movements of the Sun, planets, Galilean moons, meteors, asteroids and comets. As we begin this new unit, you should see your student using their “Study Rings” to take notes and write down facts as we go. This is NOT for a grade. Our 6th graders are in need of practicing their note-taking skills and study abilities. As I have tried to work with them on this I created these study rings. They have been told that if they will just take 10 minutes a day to add facts to them and/or read through them, it will help them. I have also let them know I have more index cards if they run out and need to add to them and I will give them a new (different) colored card with each new unit we start. I will not replace them if they lose them, they have been given several strategies on how to keep up with them and they are very welcome to rebuild one with their own materials on their own but they are responsible for keeping up with them. I am available during intervention through the day if they need help or just want me to check to be sure they are on the right track. If you would like to add my 6th grade Pre-AP science calendar to your calendar as your student has to theirs, go to my website http://sites.google.com/a/bisdmail.net/tgoulding/, choose the page for class calendar and scroll down to the bottom. There is a +GoogleCalendar button you can click and then choose “Yes add to my calendar”. Tada! You will have information from my calendar synced into yours automatically.

I am looking forward to a great new week!!

Pre-AP Math ~ Mrs. Justice

This week we will be continuing our study of fractions and mixed numbers. Students will be able to explain the steps needed to multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers. They will be able to use their knowledge of these concepts to solve real-world mathematical problems.

Accelerated Math ~ Mrs. Baird

This week we will be working on 2 step equations and inequalities. Students should expect a quiz during the week.

STEAM Science ~ Mrs. Cornell

Humanities ~ Ms. Curtis and Mrs. Lindamood

This week in Humanities we will be completing our Children’s book project. Students will finalize their book pages and work on illustrations. Each student has a reading log and should be reading each night. We will also be learning about government systems around world. We will also be looking at what good citizenship looks like and how citizens need to participate in government to preserve a representative democracy.

Art ~ Mrs. Bishop

Dear Parents,

9-28 through 10-2 is an extra exciting week for our students. We are finishing up our surrealism projects and getting them ready for our show around town. Your student will know which business their art will be in and I will send out a list. We will also be reviewing all vocabulary and ideas that we've talked about this 6 weeks. Then, we will play a game and take a Kahoot vocabulary test.

I've enjoyed having each and every one of your students. They are a joy and they are already growing their art skills!

Art ~ Mrs. Dickerson

This week in art we studied Salvador Dali and Illusion artists. With their inspiration in mind, we are creating our own surreal environment with illusion tunnels. We will continue this project into the next week with a critique.

Beginning Band ~ Mr. Sypert

Students are completing their first playing quiz this week and they are having a blast. We are also introducing a new software program called SmartMusic that turns their instrument into a video game controller similar to the games Rock Band or Guitar Hero. It should be a great way for the students to enjoy their at home practice time even more.

If you have any questions regarding the band program please contact me at asypert@bisdmail.net.

P.E. ~ Ms. Woolsey

Please remember to bring and drink from your water bottles throughout each day. PE uniforms should go home this coming week! (shirts are in however, shorts are coming soon!) Cardio Day will be Wednesday this week and we will continue to practice following the Procedures & Expectations of physical education.
