ART INSTALL
In fall 2021, Virginia MOCA invited students from Maury to dig into the ecological issues facing Tidewater, Virginia. Taking inspiration from artist Maya Lin, students considered how they could educate visitors about these issues in a visual way. Using the design thinking model, students researched, designed, and created site-responsive, environmentally conscious, public art installations for the Museum Grounds. On Thursday May 19th, students attended an art install at the VB Museum of Contemporary Arts. The students who represented Maury were Avery Branum, Jack Breitberg, Jackson Stenger, Jenna Vazquez, John "Tug" Rafter Kamila Bardoun, and Tonanzin Green. Your Maury family is incredibly proud of you.

MAURY BEES
Mr. George picked up a swarm of honeybees with a queen from the Battleship Wisconsin. He had about two pounds of bees that he has fondly nicknamed the "Navy bees". He put the hive in our apiary, covered it with newspaper, and placed the new "Navy bees" above the existing Maury hive. Then he placed a feeder of sugar water above the Maury hive. In a few days the bees chewed through the newspaper and became one big happy and healthy family!
Special thanks to Naila Rivera Morales, Jasmine Bruce, and Nathaniel Flint for their efforts assisting Mr. George after school with the swarm - they helped as he removed comb and placed it into frames! Now we have two strong and healthy hives!
Please keep us in mind and call if you happen to see any swarms.
Thanks from the Maury Garden Club
NHS JCOC DINNER

RESPONSIBLE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Since the beginning of the school year, schools across the nation have experienced a variety of issues related to social media. While social media does have positive qualities such as connecting with family and friends, establishing networks, etc. it can also be used for nefarious purposes.
For example, Tik Tok (a video-focused social network) related challenges inciting violence towards schools that have included vandalizing school bathrooms, slapping teachers, etc. There are also Instagram pages run by students that encourage posting pictures that were taken during school hours. While some may consider these types of posts amusing, we do not.
Being a digital citizen, someone who has an identity on the Internet, comes with many rights and responsibilities which are intended to protect you as well as everyone else with whom you interact.
These Tik Tok challenges and IG pages are examples of the inappropriate use of social media. Unfortunately, when social media is misused and a connection to the school is established, there are consequences. Some postings may be considered harassing and menacing and could result in school detention and/or suspension. We prefer to avoid these situations, but we need your help. Parents and guardians, please join us in speaking with your children about the ramifications of their decisions. In addition, we implore you to closely monitor your child’s use of social media. Let’s work together to ensure that our students are in a safe and secure learning environment.
Below you can find the student code of conduct.
PARENTS AND GUARDIANS
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Please talk to your students about sharing information regarding school related issues with their assistant principal/principal. A proactive approach focuses on eliminating problems before they have a chance to appear and a reactive approach is based on responding to events after they have happened. The difference between these two approaches is the perspective each one provides in assessing actions and events. We would like to be proactive, so please help us by encouraging your students to share information concerning school related issues with us. Please take a look below, find your students' administrator, and encourage them to come see us when there is an issue.
Thank you for your continued support.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
Norfolk Public Schools has implemented Edmentum’s Exact Path for Reading and Math as a system of support to ensure that all students reach their full potential in literacy and numeracy. Students in Algebra I, Geometry, and English 9 will be assessed using Renaissance STAR three times per year. The scale scores from STAR will be imported into Exact Path to generate learning paths that will individualize learning for each student. Students can work in their learning paths during the school day (core, intervention time, before/after school) and at home. Students will be required to use Exact Path at least 20 minutes per day, per class. Teachers will monitor student progress through active notifications and provide additional instruction and support as needed. Please contact your child’s teacher for more information.

12TH GRADERS MUST HAVE THEIR SECOND MENINGOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINE
12th Graders Must Have Their Second Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine to Stay Enrolled In School.
Meningococcal ACWY vaccine can help protect against meningococcal disease.
Virginia Law mandates that each rising senior has two properly spaced doses of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). The first dose shall be administered prior to entry to the 7th grade. The second dose shall be administered prior to entry to the 12th grade. Please provide proof of vaccination to Mrs. Elforsi, School Nurse.
The 2020 General Assembly passed House Bill 1090 which amends the minimum vaccination requirements for attendance at a public or private elementary, middle or secondary school, child care centers, nursery schools, family home day care, or developmental center
This legislation became effective July 1, 2021, and amends the Code of Virginia § 32.1-46.A.4 to require:
Two properly spaced doses of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). The first dose shall be administered prior to entry to the seventh grade. The second dose shall be administered prior to entry to the twelfth grade.
All 12th graders must have this vaccine within the first 90 days of school. This vaccine is available by your healthcare provider. Reminders will be sent to those who are not documented as having the vaccine in the Virginia Department of Health records and will be asked to provide verification.
