Heritage Bears
August 2016
Principal's Message
Dear Heritage Families,
I love the excitement that builds as we approach the beginning of a new school year! As you know, we are always asking your children to continue reading during the summer months. As the lead learner at Heritage, I thought you might be interested in my summer reading selections. My summer reading included The Heart of Leadership by Mark Miller and The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon. If you are looking for a new book to begin reading, I would highly recommend either one of these books! Both books are about developing leadership character and about how to cultivate positive energy in everything you do!
I want to let you know our goal at Heritage is to not only develop our students’ academic skills but also their leadership character. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success! Our school theme this year is “Show Your True Colors!” The phrase “show true colors” is used to refer to when someone is in a situation and he or she does something that shows what kind of character that person really has developed. Our true colors at Heritage are RESPECT (Aug/Sept), SERVICE (Oct/Nov), INTEGRITY (Dec/Jan), COOPERATION (Feb/Mar), and SELF-CONTROL (Apr/May). We want to help our students develop these true colors and we want their actions to reflect these true colors!
As we think about the beginning of school, please ensure your children follow these daily guidelines:
1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience
2) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
3) Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
4) Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life
5) Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
6) Knows that you expect him/her to be kind and caring each and every day
I personally invite you to visit school for lunch or volunteer in your child’s classroom. If you have questions about your child’s lunch time, school events, the Student/Parent Handbook, meal and nutrition information, or anything else school-related please feel free to call the school office (636-327-3839) or you can also visit our school website for a variety of information. One last detail—please consider joining the Heritage PTA! Heritage Elementary has an incredible PTA and they would love to have you as a member!
I hope you and your family enjoy the remaining days of summer! I am excited to see both our new and returning faces at Meet the Teacher Night on Tuesday, August 9 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. We will begin showing our true colors on the first day of school—Thursday, August 11!
“It’s a GREAT day to be a BEAR!”
Sincerely,
Dr. Kraft

Back to School Information
Heritage Intermediate begins instruction at 8:20 am and concludes at 3:20 pm. Students are allowed to enter the building at 8:05 am. Please refer to the information below about Parent Drop-off/Pick-up, Walkers, Bus Riders, and the Chautauqua before/after school program.
Heritage Intermediate Arrival/Dismissal Procedures
Parent Drop off / Pick up of Students (see map below) All students will be dropped off or picked up in front of the Heritage Primary building at 612 Blumhoff Avenue. Parents will need to remain in their cars and our staff will help unload / load your student. Drop off using the Heritage Primary entrance helps ensure the safety of your student, and avoids our buses being blocked in from traffic congestion as they exit on the Carr Street side of campus. (Exceptions are before/after school clubs or tutoring that occur on the Intermediate side of campus, late morning arrivals, or early afternoon pick-up.) Please remember that students cannot be dropped off in the morning before 8:05 am as there isn’t supervision. If a student arrives after 8:20 am, a parent or adult MUST accompany the student into the building and sign them in as a late arrival.
Walkers Students who live close enough to walk to school from the east side of campus may enter and be dismissed on the Intermediate side. All other walkers should arrive and be dismissed at the Heritage Primary cafeteria entrance. Heritage staff are stationed at designated crosswalks starting at 8:05 am. Students should not arrive prior to 8:05 am or attempt to cross any street without a crossing guard present. If you meet your walker, please wait outside the appropriate doors to retrieve your child. You may then proceed to the crosswalk. If you have designated your student to be a walker, they will be expected to enter and exit the building at the appropriate doors and considered to be living close enough to walk to and from home.
Bus Riders Buses will load and unload in the rear of the school buildings.
Chautauqua Before/After Care Families who need to drop off earlier than 8:05 am or pick up later than 3:20 pm may enroll their students in our Chautauqua before/after school program. Parents and students may access this program through the Heritage Primary cafeteria doors beginning at 6 am for early arrivals and until 6 pm in the evening. Enrollment information is available on the district website or you can call 636-327-5090 with additional questions.
Any changes to a student’s regular mode of transportation will need a written note to the teacher or a parent phone call to the school office before 2 pm. This procedure will ensure a consistent schedule, so as not to delay students from getting home and also allows enough time for the office to relay the information to the teacher. Thank you for your cooperation in following our student arrival and dismissal procedures. You may contact the Intermediate office at 636-327-3839 if you have any questions or concerns.
Student Lunch Schedules
Parents and family members are welcome to visit their child at school during their lunch time. All visitors are required to check in at the main office with a valid driver's license and will be given a visitor's pass. Guests are to sit with their student at the designated visitor tables and should only bring food for the student they are visiting.

Heritage Parent Teacher Association
The Heritage PTA supports our entire campus, Primary and Intermediate, as one association and coordinates many activities for our school every year. We encourage our parents and teachers to become members. PTA Representatives will have membership forms available during Meet the Teacher Night on the evening of August 9th as well as new Spiritwear for purchase. The PTA welcomes volunteers for various events throughout the school year. For more information visit the PTA website.
How do i volunteer in my child's classroom?
Anyone who wishes to participate in classroom activities such as holiday parties or field trips will need to have a completed background check on file every new school year. This includes child abuse and neglect screenings, as well as a check of the national sex offender registry. We suggest doing this at the start of the school year while you are filling out all of the other requested paperwork. It only takes a few minutes to complete and can be found on the district website or you can pick up a handbook at the school office. When completed and signed, please return Forms A and B to the school office to be processed. Forms will also be available at Meet the Teacher Night on August 9th.
