Adult and Community Education
"In The Know" 4/11/2017
A Message from the Leadership Team
We are fortunate to have outstanding teachers on our campus. This past week Marie Coleman, Leo Mediavilla, Scott Schnapauff and Khris Betten Jutasi shared their expertise at the Commission on Adult Education Conference in Orlando, where over 2,000 educators were in attendance. Teachers learned about "Breakout EDU - It's Time for Something Different", " The 7 Seven Habits on the Inside", and "The Changing Classroom -Removing Walls for Students". All their presentations were packed with people from throughout the United States who came together to share and learn about best practices.
A recurring topic at the conference was “integrated education”. The federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) regulations released in July 2016 mandates that adult education, workforce development, and postsecondary education partners work together to design and implement a key strategy in career pathways: Integrated Education and Training (IET). So how does that impact us? WIOA provides over $700,000 in funding to our adult education programs. WIOA also funds the Career Service Centers which sponsor eligible students to attend the technical programs. Under the new WIOA regulations the three partners must come together and come up with a plan that allows our ESOL/ABE/GED students to be taught literacy, work and college-readiness skills so they can move through school and into living wage jobs faster.
One of the best models that currently exists is the iBEST model from the state of Washington. It uses a team-teaching approach where students work with two teachers in the classroom: one provides job-training and the other teaches basic skills in reading, math or English language. Students get the help they need while studying in the career field of their choice.
We are currently in the mist of grant writing season and we will be identifying strategies that we will use to expose ESOL/ABE/GED students at all levels to college-career readiness and identify how to best integrate them into technical education.

Community Resources
Community organizations are a great place to find helpful resources, places that can help us with sometimes difficult situations. Community organizations depend on volunteers to help provide those resources. ONE of the very real ways to become part of a community is to become a volunteer within that community. You interact, speak and assist those living in your own backyard. Volunteering is a great way to practice our skills and also can be a great way to look for future employment.
