The Bulldogger Quarterly Report
"Published by Dewey Schools" January 2018 - March 2018
What's New?
On a different note, we've committed to changing our student information system for the 2018-2019 school year to a company called Infinite Campus. While this change affects our staff members much more than our students and their families, there are functions of our student information system that provides parental/guardian access to the academic information of their student. Through the process of determining the best system for our school, we certainly took this into account and we believe the change will not only benefit our staff members, but also our students and their families. More information will be provided as we move closer to the 2018-2019 school year but we think you'll like the changes.
As you may be aware by now, we're currently working on implementing a 1:1 Technology Initiative in grades 5 - 12 for the 2018-2019 school year. You may be asking yourself, what does that mean? Simply, it means that we're planning on being able to provide one technology device, specifically a Chromebook, for each student within that grade span. A Chromebook is basically a portable personal computer that connects to the internet and runs on Google's web-based Chrome Operating System. The reason the District thinks this is an important step is that the we believe technology is an essential element in developing a student-centered learning environment. With that in mind, this approach allows increased opportunities in many areas. Increased student engagement, maximized opportunities for student collaboration, expansion of resources beyond the normal textbook, extension in capacity to meet individual student needs, and preparation of students entering a technologically advanced workforce are all positive outcomes for implementing this initiative. So what will this initiative look like? Well, it could look different depending on what school and/or grade level your student(s) is attending. During the next few months, a committee will be working to develop the processes and policies that will direct this venture. We're extremely excited about the opportunities ahead of us.
If you have questions about these items or something unrelated, please feel free to contact my office or any of our school offices.
With much appreciation.
Vince Vincent
Superintendent

Inclement Weather Days
It should also be noted that only in the most extreme circumstances would school be “let out early” as weather develops during the school day. Sending students home early poses a greater problem for many working parents than keeping their children at school until 3:15.
Just a reminder, we'll always announce school closures in a number of ways but an easy way to be notified is through our email/text message option (sign up via our website at www.deweyk12.org) or follow us on twitter or facebook.
Federal Programs - Indian Education
These programs provide in-school tutoring for all grade levels, school supplies, and reimbursement for senior caps and gowns, A.C.T. and S.A.T test fees. The Johnson O’Malley program requires a copy of the student’s Indian card, or tribal registration card, each student must have a copy of his or hers own Indian card. The Title VII Federal program only requires that the parents fill out a form stating the tribal ancestry of the student with no documentation needed. For information about these programs, contact Shawn Matheson, at 534-3800, ext. 213.
School Wellness & School Meals
The health of our students at Dewey Public Schools is very important to all of us. A significant amount of research exists showing the important roles nutrition and physical health have in student learning. To increase the likelihood for students to achieve their full academic potential, the district is committed to promoting health and wellness in all it’s school sites. The school's wellness policy that it's place aims to achieve the following:
- Students have access to healthy foods in accordance with federal and state nutrition standards.
- Student receive quality nutrition education.
- Students have opportunities to be physically active before, during, and after school.
- School sites promote nutrition, physical activity, and other wellness encouraging behaviors.
- Community engagement in the district’s wellness program.
- A smooth operation of the district’s wellness program.

GATE Program (Gifted & Talented Education)
The 2017-2018 goal for the GATE classes is to present students with state of the art technology providing them the opportunity to master skills that they will need in high school, college, and future careers through a MAKERSPACE setting. A Makerspace is a place where students gather to collaborate, create, invent and learn. Students choose the curriculum that they are most interested in and accept challenges to complete at those stations. In a given class period, you will find students working in small groups on different activities. These include STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) activities such as robotics, computer programming, painting, jewelry design, 3D design & printing, yearbook design, coding, snap and squishy circuits, movie-making, inventive play, or green screen projects. Every week we work to utilize the entirety of the class period to provide students with a multitude of information allowing them to build their foundation block by block.
The GATE Program is planning on engaging in a hands-on opportunity at the Tulsa Zoo this spring. We are excited to join with the zoo staff for tours and investigations that will be unlike any visit to the zoo they have ever experienced. We are also planning a college campus visit for the junior and senior students to Oklahoma State University in the spring. Lastly, Mrs. Bankston will host an Open House for GATE in her room on Monday, February 12th from 6:00-7:00 for students to share with their parents.

Consequences for school non-compliance includes notification of state authorities and eventual loss of federal funding. Any questions regarding this requirement can be directed to the High School office or High School counselor.

District-Wide Notices
We would like to remind parents that, by state law, our school campus is designated as “Tobacco Free”. We request that all parents and others observe the “Tobacco Free Law” while on the school grounds. Especially while picking up students in school parking lots, on playgrounds or other areas of the school grounds. Please extinguish all cigarettes and properly dispose of them before arriving on school grounds.
Thank You.
