CSCS Parent Panthergram Newsletter
December 2nd, 2018
Mr. Anderson's Message
The holiday season is also a time to see our community come together to support and help those who may be struggling. My heart is so full of joy as the school, fire department, local churches and organizations band together to support each other. There are too many people to thank in a simply newsletter, but know how much your dedication to others makes a difference in our world and sets an example for our students as they grow and become citizens making a positive change to our world.
Please enjoy the celebrations in this Smore Parent Newsletter and keep supporting our school as we work together to make our community the best it can be!

With the first marking period complete and parent teacher conferences wrapped up, there has been a lot of parents asking for more information regarding our PBIS ROARS Home Behavior Matrix. This matrix was designed by members of our PTO, teachers, parents, and administrators to provide a set of behavioral expectations for children when they are outside of school. Please feel free to download, print, and post in your home! You can refer to it with your children and help to set a high standard for positive and accountable behavior in your own home!

We also taught our students the month of December focus, which is Perseverance! Mr. Anderson and Mr. Flanagan taught a lesson on how to practice playing guitar to grow and Mrs.DeCamp, Mrs. Adams, and Mrs. Koehler modeled how to work hard and not give up when writing. Our students shared words of encouragement and reflected on how they can never give up, even when something is really hard!

Tips for Getting to School On Time: Establish a Routine!
- Give yourself and children enough time to get ready. No TV on school mornings.
- Provide students their own alarm clock. Teach kids to set and use their own alarm clock or clock radio.
- Set alarm clock 30 minutes earlier for students who need more time to get ready for school.
- Plan ahead the night before: such as identifying and pre-prepping breakfast, have kids choose clothes and shoes the night before, and pack their backpacks with completed homework and snacks/water. Parents can prepare for work the night before too.
- Set a regular bedtime schedule. Age should be a factor.
- Get proper rest and go to bed early.
- Have your child go to bed 10 minutes earlier and get up 10 minutes earlier.
- Have kids bathe or shower in the evening.
- Help your child relax before bedtime with a story, instead of the stimulation of television. Have schoolwork and lunch ready and laid out, ready to go. Create a special folder for completed assignments.
- Provide regular study times and a quiet, clean area for doing homework.
- Have your child walk to school or the bus stop with another child who is always on time.
- Limit and balance extra-curricular activities.
- Have a back-up plan for cold weather for cars not starting.
Being on Time Matters!
Schools stress the need for students to get to school and class on time and with good reason. Studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Education on truancy, which is connected with tardiness, show that school attendance is a major factor when it comes to school success and student behavior.
Problems with Tardiness
The most crucial learning hours of a school day are the morning hours, because they are when students are most attentive. Students who are tardy miss the beginning of their morning classes, and they also cause a distraction when they arrive late to class.
Academics and Achievement
Students who are frequently tardy have lower GPAs, lower scores on standardized assessments, and lower graduation rates. Chronic tardiness in elementary and middle school is also linked to failure in high school.
Behavior Problems
In the National Center for Education Statistics 2007 Indicators of School Crime and Safety, teachers surveyed reported that students who are frequently tardy have higher rates of suspension and other disciplinary measures. Tardiness causes students to feel disconnected with school, leading to behavior problems and dropouts.
Job Performance
Students who are frequently tardy to school are also more apt to be fired from a job for showing up late.
Effect on Others
When students are tardy, they negatively impact their teachers and other students. Teachers are often required to allow tardy students to make up work, which often requires them to restructure their lessons or re-teach missed material. Tardiness also takes other students' attention away from a teacher's lesson, leading to more behavior problems and missed instruction.
