Annexation

The process of legally adding land area to a city is annexation.

Modern Annexation

Today, however, cities are less likely to annex peripheral land because the residents prefer to organize their own services rather than pay city taxes for them.

Metropolitan government

The number of local governments exceeds 20,000 throughout the United States, including several hundred in the Detriot area alone.
