Malaria Virus

Malaria is caused by a parasite called plasmodium, which is transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitos. In the body, the parasites multipy in the liver and infect red blood cells.

Malaria can be very dangerous and can cause death. Once symptoms are seen malaria should be taken serious and treated immediately.


There are many advances that help prevent malaria. One of them is trying to develop and license a first generation malaria vaccine that has protective efficacy of more than 50% against severe disease and death and lasts longer than one year. One of the most important recent advances in malaria research is the mapping of the Plasmodium falciparum genome.
