Definition:
Any of a large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues and including sugars, starch etc.
F unctions for Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates have six major functions within the body:
- Providing energy and regulation of blood glucose
- Sparing the use of proteins for energy
- Breakdown of fatty acids and preventing ketosis
- Biological recognition processes
- Flavor and Sweeteners
- Dietary fiber
Example of carbohydrates
Chocolate
Cookie
Fudge
Candy
Fruit juice

My reasoning
why i had picked carbohydrates for the most important essential nutrient is because the regulation of blood glucose i guess you need that because its like insulin to regulate blood sugar and it breaksdown fatty acids and prevents ketosis. (ketosis-raised levels of ketone bodies in the body associating with abnormal fat,metabolism,and diabetes)and it seems like you don't need that soooooo.........yep and thats why i think carbohydrates are important
