When your instructor hands you a blank piece of paper and asks you to make something, do you get excited about all the possibilities of what to make? Or does your mind draw a blank and you become overwhelmed with anxiety? Open-ended, process-oriented art is an endless opportunity for making choices, coming to conclusions, second-guessing decisions, and evaluating results. Children become more comfortable with uncertainty and remain flexible thinkers, which is key for creativity and confidence. And the more experience they have with a variety of materials and techniques, the more likely they are to try new combinations and ideas.

But what does it really mean to be a flexible thinker? Flexible Thinkers have the ability to adapt to change and uncertainty and become good problem solvers. Art teaches children the fluidity that at there is more than one way of doing something. It also teaches that everyone's interpretation of something can be different and being different is okay too. More often than not, there will be times in life where there are no instructions given, and you will need to be able to make a decision and develop solutions in various scenarios. The most successful people are those who can see opportunities and adapt to change based on the materials given. This is where early exposure to art comes in handy.

Art helps kids connect. Each day, children absorb an incredible amount of new information, and art can help them process what they have learned in a safe, reflective way. According to author Jean Van't Hul, when we encourage our children to explore art, we encourage them to master themselves. The art classroom environment is where it is safe to experiment and create, where questions are encouraged and children have free access to the materials they need and enjoy. We do this not to produce career artists, but to raise children who are confident and comfortable with their creativity in whatever form in takes. Summer is a great time for children to delve into art expression to help balance the stress of daily living. This summer, IQuest offers an array of new and exciting art classes from: Manga Art, Mixed Media Design, Stop Motion, Art of A Genius, to the Art Experience. June 12-July 28. AM & PM Camps.
