Digital Feedback
Helping students grow and develop academically
Feedback through Google Suite
- Use the "comment" feature after highlighting specific text (this is a great time to use the permanent clipboard extension)
- Need to bold or italicize text in a comment? Use *bold* and _italics_ by putting the symbols in front & back of your word(s) you want to emphasize
- Add a specific person to your comment by typing + and the person's name from your contacts. The person identified in the comment will receive a notification
- Switch a Google Doc from editing to suggesting mode to modify text that another user will have to accept or reject
- Create a color-coded feedback system (think proofreading marks, but with different color highlighters in the text of a Doc)
Feedback through Google Keep
Check out the "Keep Notepad" in the Tools menu in Google Docs. Write the feedback you often provide students in a Keep note. When you are ready to input your feedback, simply click and drag the note into the doc. Ta da! The text appears in the doc! Check out this how-to video.

Feedback through Google Classroom
- Comments can be posted to the whole class or privately to an individual student
- As students attach documents to an assignment, assignments can be viewed and feedback left during the assignment process
- See a need to share targeted supplemental material with students? Share specific content with one or a group of students by posting differentiated material to a select group of students through Classroom.
Want to quickly open submitted assignments? Check out this extension.
Try these tools to provide feedback!
Video feedback
When you need to show it and not tell it:
- Record a screencast explanation, better yet have students record explanations that can be shared with other students!
- Provide students with a link to a YouTube video
- Create a Gif
Visual feedback
Spoken feedback
When text doesn't quite cut it, try leaving spoken feedback.

- Talk and Comment extension (have students install the extension, too, so the audio is embedded!)
Time Saving Teacher Tips
Write comments faster!
Use the Permanent Clipboard Chrome extension to keep frequently used comments at your fingertips by using this extension.
Use the Speech Pad Chrome extension to convert your speech to text. Supports multiple languages!
Open assignments faster!
Go to the folder in Google Drive that stores student assignments, select the Drive 20 icon, and the first 20 files (or another specified amount) will open in individual tabs.
Watch the process faster!
Combine Draftback and Screencastify:
- Ask students to explain their process
- Identify a problem area that a student should address
Try This
- Give snippets of targeted feedback during the process of work, not just at the end
- Ask students what they need feedback on
- Pick one skill, at a time, to give feedback on
JoeZoo Express is a great time-saving tool, check it out!
Feedback Loop
- Where do they think they improved?
- What areas do they still need help with?
- Which feedback will help them the most in future assignments?
If leaving comments within the Google Suite, students can reply to comments, ensuring feedback is not "thrown in the garbage."
