Classroom Instruction that Works - Setting Objectives; bringing in the ELPS

This past week we took a look at breaking down our classroom instruction -starting with our classroom objectives. We identified and created appropriately specific instructional objectives for our lesson plans that would give students a true picture of what we want them to learn.

A few examples from this week's lesson plans include:

  • Math - I can represent and solve addition of fractions.
  • Reading - I can use important story ideas to retell the text.
  • Writing -I can write a poem about my observation of my object.
  • Science - I can explain the role of a conductor and an insulator.
  • Social Studies - I can describe how archaeologists learned about the Archaic Indians.

This week we will be digging deeper on using the ELPS when planning objectives. Did you know that 43.49% of our students are limited english proficient? That's approximately 314 students. So how do the ELPs help these students? The ELPs are English Language Proficiency standards that LEP students master as they become proficient in the English Language. The ELPs standards use the same literacy domains that TELPAS uses. This assists in creating a guide so the student expectations, your instruction, and assessment(TELPAS) are aligned. These domains are:

  • listening
  • speaking
  • reading
  • writing

This week Dr. Cantu, Multilingual Department Director, and her staff will facilitate in an ELPs discussion for our campus during PLC. The topics she will cover will include:

  • Tools for working with long term ELLs
  • ELA lesson embedded strategies for ELLs
  • Progress Monitoring of ELLs
  • Including ELPs objectives in your lesson plans

Lastly, thank you all for making my very first Boss' Day as principal wonderful. I truly enjoyed all of your well wishes and tokens of gratitude. Ms. Gonzalez and I are two blessed ladies and we can't tell you all enough how appreciative I am of you. Another week is upon us. Let's make it count!
