WE CARE WEDNESDAY

This school year, we are excited that We Care Wednesdays will highlight more themes... and this month we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15-10/15)!

Roberto Clemente

We continue our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing an outstanding athlete,

Roberto Enrique Clemente was a Puerto Rican professional baseball right fielder who played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, becoming both the first Latin American and Caribbean player to be enshrined.

Clemente was an All-Star, MVP, Gold Glove winner and a two-time World Series Champion. He was a talented baseball player but he was also a great humanitarian. Clemente did charity work in Latin American and Caribbean countries during the off-seasons, often delivering baseball equipment and food to those in need. To honor Clemente's legacy, the MLB renamed its annual Commissioner's Award; now known as the Roberto Clemente Award. That award is given to the player who "best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team."

Ellen Ochoa

Next we celebrate a brilliant engineer!

Ellen Ochoa was born locally in Los Angeles, CA and she attended school in San Diego and then in Northern California. Her family was from the Sonora area of Mexico. In 1993, Dr. Ochoa became the world's first Hispanic woman in space during her mission on the space shuttle Discovery, eventually logging nearly 1,000 hours in space. She retired from spacecraft operations and, in 2013, became the first Hispanic director of NASA's Johnson Space Center as well as the second woman to hold that position. She is an inspiration to us all.

Quote from Ellen Ochoa about her experiences as an astronaut and leader...

"I think of it as a good opportunity to let, in particular, school kids know that this job and other interesting jobs in science and engineering are open to anyone who works hard in school and gets a good education and studies math and science. And that it's not just for a select group of people." - Ellen Ochoa
