Mrs. Wells' Classroom News

Week of November 17-21

Welcome to our NEW newsletter!

For years I had typed up and sent home newsletters. I try to do it on a monthly basis, but sometimes I forget! I found this online template and am going to try to do a WEEKLY newsletter so you know what is going on in our classroom each week. Please be patient with me as I figure this out!

It is finally getting cold out there! Please have your child wear a coat to school each day. As long as the temperature is above 40 degrees we will go outside. We go out every day at 10:15, so it is early and it is cold!

Curriculum Updates-What are we doing in class?

Here is what we will be working on this week in class

Reading We are focusing on nonfiction texts this week. We will be reading nonfiction books and looking for nonfiction text features, such as headings, charts, graphs, lists, captions, and many more. Your child's homework will have them working on a scavenger hunt in nonfiction texts. They will be looking for the nonfiction text features that we have been learning about!

Writing With all of our reading about nonfiction topics, we will be writing nonfiction pieces in class. Right now we are practicing organizing the information and then writing the information. In a couple weeks we will focus on writing a nonfiction piece based on the social studies topics we will be discussing in class.

Math We are working with numbers in the thousands, adding and subtracting numbers, and still working on multiplication facts. Math is a busy time of day. We have also started our Math Small Groups, which focus on the specific math needs of your child. We have students working on different skills in math and this is the time of day their specific needs are met. It is a fun time of day!

Social Studies We are beginning a unit on the colonial Americans, specifically in North Carolina.

Cans for Kids

We are collecting cans and nonperishable food items for our schools yearly Cans for Kids drive. Please help out by sending in cans or food items for your child to contribute to the drive. Thank you!

Accelerated Reader

All the students have been taking AR tests all year. The class is working hard to focus on accuracy when taking tests, meaning we want all students to get 100% (or close to it) on their tests. We look at our class accuracy each day and are trying to get it as close to 100% as we can. This past week our class accuracy was 91.3%!

Way to go, class!

We are in need of pencils for our class! Our pencils seem to grow legs and walk away! If you can help by sending in pencils I would really appreciate it! Thank you!
