Newsletter Week 4 Term 1
Churchill Park School 23rd February 2023
From our Principal - Marie Todd
Kia Ora Whānau,
We have had our first full week back at school! It’s great to see the children getting into the swing of their morning routines, particularly those who were shy last year now greeting me with a warm welcome.
Our hearts go out to those who were affected by the devastation of Cyclone Gabrielle and the clean up that continues in the worst hit areas. To show our support we will be holding a non-uniform day next week on Thursday 2nd March where children can bring a gold coin. All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross Disaster Fund. Churchill Park School was extremely lucky throughout the cyclone with very little damage to our buildings and grounds. To ensure everyone’s safety the school’s trees have been assessed and given the all clear with only a few branches needing to be trimmed. The forest area in the junior school is a well utilised part of the children’s playground, and there were many happy smiles in being able to return.
Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the Meet the Teacher/Whānau Evening in support of setting your child(ren) up for success and working in partnership with the school. Our aim next year is to move towards a model where parents and children can meet the teacher engaging in a more personal conversation in getting to know one another to support teaching and learning. However, as a stepping stone, a parent questionnaire was emailed to families last week. The questionnaire can either be completed together with your child or if you prefer by a parent and returned to the classroom teacher. The information contained in the questionnaire is confidential to the classroom teacher.
As many of you will be aware, Churchill Park School went through a Strategic Review last year, which gathered community, staff and student voice surrounding the strengths and future areas for development over the next three years. The Churchill Park School 2023-2026 Strategic Plan is a key guiding document that underpins the school’s vision, ambition, objectives, and targets to achieve the objectives of the National Education and Learning Priorities (NELP) and the school’s priorities. This can be viewed on our website by firstly clicking About in the drop down menu and then Strategic Plan.

Waitematā Whānau at SwimTastic
We have been improving our swimming skills with lessons over two weeks.
This week we got to do two new programmes. On Monday we joined up with another class and we did Aqua Tabata for 10 minutes. It is doing exercise to music and we were very tired after our session.
On Wednesday we did a Water Safety Programme. There were three stations that we rotated around. In one station we had to throw our life jacket in the water and jump in after and put it on while we were floating on our backs. We had to put the buckles on and swim to the other end of the pool.
In the second station, we used noodles. The first time we had to jump into the water, scull on for ten seconds, then grab the noodle our buddy held out. The second time, we had to jump into the water and then the instructor threw the noodle in for us to get and swim to the ladder. At the last station, we jumped in without our goggles and swam on our backs halfway up the pool. We also had to swim four strokes on our back, then flip over and swim four strokes on our front. Water safety is very important as New Zealand is surrounded by water, and we learned about it in a fun way.

The best gift you can give to your child/children is to allow them to free play in natural settings these School Holidays with CK!
The Conscious Kids Social Enterprise invites your tamariki to create deep/emotional with Natural Environment + Communities around them in a 100% play-in-nature school holiday programme this April.
Autumn is such a great season! Nature gives us the most vibrant yellows and reds colors, inviting us all to go outside, explore, play, and have heaps of fun!
Nature free play has proven physical, emotional and social health benefits. Our supervised programme allows kids to lead their own activities - mudslides, tree climbing, puddle splashing, hammock and hut building etc. Apart from the obvious safety restrictions and respect framework, there are few instructions for kids. Our number 1 'rule' is to HAVE FUN! Staff are present for supervision and support, but children follow their innate ‘readiness meter’ to make their own decisions before getting involved in any new situation. Such child-led play enhances creativity, problem-solving, communication (including listening!), collaboration and many other 21st century skills.
Our Holiday Programmes will run in April (WEEK 1: From Tuesday 11th to 21st of April), at a cost of $75/child per day.
EARLY BIRD TICKETS SALE will be available from Friday 24th of February to Wednesday 1st of March, at a cost of $70/child per day!
Daily programmes run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are designed for children aged 5 - 12 yrs old. For booking and more information, please visit http://www.consciouskids.co.nz
