Mill Creek Magic Messages
News and Updates from Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha 12/17/2021
Mill Creek Teachers Incorporate Seasonal Themes into their Instruction...
Kindergarten - Ms. Thomas' class read Snowmen at Night and then brainstormed a bunch of different activities in which snowmen (and women!) could engage at night!
1st Grade - Students were able explore various winter holidays as Mrs. Hannon, Mr. Hartigan, and Mrs. Cocca visited each classroom to complete activities, games, and crafts. Mrs. Hannon had students learn about Hanukkah. After learning about a few traditions, students had time to play a fun game of dreidel with their classmates! Students traveled to Mexico with Mrs. Cocca. They read The Legend of the Pointsettia by Tomie dePaola. Then students made a pointsettia flower. Mr. Hartigan discussed the Norwegian holiday Saint Lucia’s Day. Students learned that children parade with lights or candles and bring tasty treats to parents and neighbors. They also made a candle to light the way through the long winter night.
3rd Grade - Ms. Sorenson's class focused on a variety of world holidays, with students creating PowerPoints and presenting to the class. Many of her students chose to present holidays they celebrate in their own homes (e.g. Hanukkah; Diwali)!
Kindergarten/4th Grade - Ms. Lincow's class did buddies with Mrs. Ruth's class this morning. They created reindeer to celebrate the holidays. They will read Immogene's Antlers and write about what they would do if they woke up with antlers! What a fun morning!!
5th Grade - Ms. Angelo's and Mr. Molenari's accelerated math classes are using triangles and trapezoids to create a forest of trees. The students measured the sides and angles to find the perimeter and area of each shape before designing their tree.
Also, Ms. Regec's class is conducting a "Frosty Friends" secret gift exchange! For most of December, the students exchange small gifts. On the last week, the students reveal themselves to their Frosty Friend. They LOVE it!!!
Finally, students in Mrs. Kaufman’s class are sharing positive thoughts! They have been writing compliments to one another and placing in stockings that they will open right before the winter holiday!

Principal's Post
We are in the Season of Giving, and that does not always need to involve tangible items. As a part of our Veterans Day activities early last month, classes "adopted" a local Veteran and wrote him/her letters of appreciation for all they have given to us. Our students wrote them in the hopes of being able to give and covey our tremendous appreciation. It has warmed our hearts to have recieved a number of responses from many of these Veterans recently. I wanted to share part of one we just received...
"A few days ago I received a packet of over 40 letters from students in your school each thanking me for my military service. What a wonderful gift! Since I don't know all of the classes involved... I am asking you to extend my thanks to all -- students and teachers and maybe others -- who were involved in this project.
As I read each and every letter, I smiled, laughed, and cried all at one time. The letters are precious. I will cherish them the rest of my days. They have made a... WWII veteran feel highly honored, but also deeply humbled."
We are so glad we could give this Veteran and some others a small gift of appreciation, and we are glad it meant so much to him!
Our thanks, to all our community Veterans and to the many other community members in service industries from what you have given and continue to give to us!
Have a wonderful weekend!

From the Desk of Mr. Murtha
As we approach Winter Break, it seems apropos for me to count my blessings. There are many. I am blessed to have a wonderful and loving family and a support system in my personal life on which I can truly count. And while life can present challenges when you least expect them, I am also fortunate to have support when these situations occur and to be able make wonderful memories with my friends and family on a regular basis.
I consider Mill Creek - its student, staff, and community - to be my other family. I certainly spend a good deal of time at Mill Creek, and I am truly blessed to come to work each day to a place I truly enjoy and where I feel just as supported as I do in my personal life. Yes, Mill Creek is my workplace, and I take pride in having a strong work ethic on behalf of our school, its students, the staff, and the greater community, but I also truly love coming here each day! I believe Mill Creek is a special place, and I am blessed to have tremendous support here, and it is my honor and privilege to serve Mill Creek - a blessing in and of itself!
I look forward to a fun and festive few days of school prior to heading into Winter Break, and one of my Holiday wishes is that all Mill Creek Community Members can count their many blessings and continue to make wonderful and lasting family memories this Holiday Season and beyond!
