The Gower Gazette
Week 18 Jan. 4, 2019
In the Classroom...
This week we are switching our goals from different cultures and traditions to wants and needs (we will still look how this compares to other countries/cultures through literature). We started with learning about the new year and making a resolution. The kids all shared their favorite thing they got for Christmas and then shared one thing they wanted that they didn't get or forgot to ask Santa for. We talked about saving money to buy this "one thing" and then we talked about ways kids can earn money. They all know they can't go get a real job until they are 16, but they discovered there are ways that children their age can earn money (I hope you heard a little about this throughout the week). They all came up with 4 ways they could earn money to buy what they want and how much money they think they should earn (even how often they think they should get paid). Their ideas are inside their Friday Folder... take a look; it's quite interesting! Once the kids decided how they could earn their money, they made a New Year's Money Goal. This whole lesson is gearing us up to thinking about jobs/careers. We had a great talk about why parents/adults work and how to get a job. We talked about college, and choosing jobs that interest you. Next week the kids will choose a career that interest them, do some research and then write an opinion piece about what they want to be when they grow up. We will be publishing these writings and then celebrating our goals with Career Day. On Career Day the kids get to dress up as the career he/she wrote about. It's a lot of fun and is totally inspiring! Career Day is just for the kids, but we will be creating a technology piece to share with you.
In Writing this week the kids focused on How To writings and using transitional words. See if your child can share some of these words with you. This week they wrote about how to make a snowman. We will continue to work on these next week.
In Math we are exploring place value and taking a closer look at numbers and how their digits represent tens and ones. Our Math Stations this week helped them practice this skill. We will continue to work on place value next week and then move onto measurement.
Science is so much fun!!! We wrapped up balance this week by making a mobile. The kids used a diagram to build it and then had to figure out how to make each part balance before we could hang it in our rooms. This was challenging, but each child got it done. Their mobiles will go home next week. Next week we will explore motion and develop an understanding of what it is. We will be looking at different forces and types of motion as well.
As you can see it has been a busy 3 days. We got A LOT accomplished. I so proud at how hard the kids worked and how they were ready to get going during this short week. There's just 3 weeks left before we track out and next week marks the end of the second quarter!!! Can you believe it??? Time is definitely flying by.
I hope you all enjoy your weekend and I'll see the kids back on Monday.
