Students will see and do activities that prove all the things mom and dad are telling them are actually true and beneficial to their well being. They will:

• Experiment to see how much sugar is in 1 can of soda as well as in other drinks.
• Observe the immediate death of a feeder guppy when exposed to nicotine.
• See a set of pig lungs that have been exposed to second hand smoke.
• Test their heart rate and see how it changes with exercise.
• Perform an experiment to observe how colds and other viruses are transmitted.

This is just some of the fun science that will be had as Raven students head into a New Year!!

Students will experience a close encounter with the amazing world of two modern materials! We will use science to explore the bizarre world of liquid nitrogen and ferro fluid and provide a glimpse of where the future of materials research might take us. We will do a variety of experiments, including breaking a heart and conclude the class by making liquid nitrogen ice cream.

Nitrogen is a gas that comprises approximately 78% of the air that we breathe. Liquid nitrogen is a product that is made by compressing the air around us until the gas is changed to a different state, a liquid. The liquid that is removed by the compression of nitrogen is extremely cold, with a temperature of -320 F. Only two other substances are colder- liquid hydrogen and liquid helium. Yep, it is really cold and is an amazing teaching tool.

Why dissect a frog you ask??? A frog is a vertebrate, meaning it has a backbone (or spine). Humans are also vertebrates. By studying the anatomy of a frog, students can learn a lot about their own anatomy. In this amazing class, students will learn how to use the tools associated with a dissection, they will learn what their various organs do, they will learn how a frog is specialized for its’ environment, and will experience just how amazing it is to see how the various systems work within this animal. There are many surgeons who say that they first discovered their life’s passion standing over a dissected frog in a class.

Summer is here and that means we can gather outside and do fire science. Prepare to see how to use fire to get an egg in a bottle, to juggle fire with your bare hands, and to see a fire tornado. With all the end of the year craziness, prepare to have a flaming good time learning all about fire.
