What is Copyright?

Copyright is a collection of rights granted to the author of a piece of work.

Types of Licenses

Public Domain

Public Domain is work that is not protected by copyright law because the copyright has expired, the creator has donated it, or it was made using public money.


Ex. Moby Dick, Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes.

Freeware

Freeware is software that has been copyrighted but given out for free.


Ex. Itunes, Safari, Media Player

Shareware

Shareware is similar to freeware, but if you want permanent/full use, you must pay for it. They offer a free trial.


Ex. Minecraft Lite, AOL, anything “Lite”

All Rights Reserved

All Rights Reserved is how the purchaser can use the copyrighted item according to exact details spelled out in the license agreement.


Ex. Software, movie, games

Open Source

Open Source is software that includes the source code with the idea that someone can improve upon it. Ex. Linux, Chrome, Firefox
