Hello BCS Staff:
I want to share the key takeaways I learned today during a teleconference with the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE). There are many details to complete around a safe return to school that are being examined and adjusted as new information is made available to us. Just today, we received the WV School Re-entry Toolkit which will serve as an additional guidance resource for decision making and fine tuning of procedures and protocols. I have included a link to the Toolkit below.
As announced by Governor Justice on Wednesday, July 8th, the first day of instruction for students will be Tuesday, September 8th. The last day for students will be no later than June 1, 2021. The school year will include 180 days of instruction and staff will complete their contractual days of employment.
I know you have questions about returning to school and we are working in a rapidly changing environment to plan for multiple scenarios and put things into place that will enable you to be successful and safe while delivering a quality education to our children. Join me on Monday, July 13th at 6pm via Zoom as I provide an update to our Board of Education regarding next steps in moving forward. (This link is located on our website).
I want to thank you for your understanding and patience, as we work through the many planning processes and details for returning to school. I want you to know that I recognize the emotional challenges that we are experiencing today. All of us serve our community as invested and compassionate educators and support staff who care about keeping children safe, supporting them as they grow academically, and supporting their social emotional growth. I appreciate keeping the dialogue open among us, remaining positive, and collectively reaching solutions that serve to benefit all of us in our community.
Thank you again for your positive energy and making a difference for all of us!
Be well, stay safe.
Patrick K. Murphy, Superintendent of Schools
