My first job was as a clerk for the House of Winston Mortuary in Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. Winston were close family friends so getting the job was pretty easy. My supervisor at the time, Ms. Elaine, had looooooong finger nails and blonde hair. We sang gospel music all day. I loved it!
My next job, a work study clerk in the Psychology department at UCLA, had me working under Jeanie. She was a Buddhist from San Jose.....she wasn't too keen on singing gospel music with me! I learned early on that my work ethic and discipline had to stay consistent no matter what relationship I enjoyed with my boss.
This is the lesson that some students need to learn at Verbum Dei. Students will have different degrees of closeness with their teachers and professors. This should never affect the commitment, focus, or persistence shown in their classes. It is true that teachers need to ensure all students feel welcomed and safe in their classrooms but students must realize that they are in charge of their performance- not the stage they are asked to perform on.
Still singing gospel music,
