WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - May 16, 2021
Principal's Corner
Dear FSA Families,
I hope that you are doing well and having a great day.
I am excited to inform you about our plans for next school year.
First of all, thank you very much for your responses to the earlier survey. We are pleased to inform you that a vast majority (about 91%) of our families responded with their preference for the on-campus learning option for the next school year.
Many positive changes occurred from the date we sent you our initial survey to today. Vaccinations are now available for anyone 12 years and older, almost all of our teachers have already completed their vaccinations, and the number of COVID-19 cases is decreasing nationwide to all-time lows. In the most recent news, CDC announced yesterday that vaccinated people are no longer required to use masks indoors or outdoors in many places, including schools. We will continue using masks till the end of this year, but these positive developments signal changes to return to pre-pandemic activities as a school. Lately, many families have also reached out to us to change their preference from virtual to on-campus learning. Thanks to these positive developments, we now have the opportunity to implement a slightly different approach to the 2021-2022 school year.
Overall, this school year was an immense success, considering how well our teachers, students, families, and community all met the challenges of COVID-19. We are very thankful to our students and teachers for their dedication and hard work throughout the year. We are also grateful to our parents for their tremendous support. While we worked all together and did everything we could to make the hybrid system successful, it would be remiss not to recognize and acknowledge that online students are not able to reap all of the benefits and advantages that come with being an FSA student. Our well-rounded educational program is designed to help students with both academic and social-emotional needs, and sharing the same physical environment plays a crucial role in both of these efforts. Therefore, with the increasing number of students returning to campus for the next school year, we are thrilled to announce that we will be better equipped to cultivate a caring and quality school environment that will serve the needs of all our precious students.
Accordingly, beginning in August 2021, we will offer online education only to students with demonstrated and recorded medical needs and emergencies. If you think your child has a medical need/emergency that requires them to remain a virtual student, please complete THIS FORM by Friday, May 21, 2021. All other students will be required to participate in on-campus learning for the 2021-2022 school year. We believe that this approach will help us continue offering both the best education and the best environment for our students’ academic success and social-emotional growth.
We will continue to monitor the health department and federal guidelines to finalize the details for the next school year. When the time comes to decide not to require a mask, it will most likely be a decision for the vaccinated people only as recommended by CDC. However, we will continue to apply social distancing and regular detailed cleaning during the day since not all age groups have access to vaccination yet.
Thank you for your continued support as we navigated this school year during a global pandemic. We are confident this model will be successful and look forward to next year being another wonderful one at FSA as we celebrate our 10th year as a private school. Should you have any questions/comments, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Next I want to share my gratitude to our Athletics and Fine Arts Departments. This past Tuesday was the last day of our athletic season for this school year. It was such a challenging year to plan athletics but Coach Ayres, with assistance from Coach Uduk, made it a huge success for our students and school. A massive shout out to both of them for this fantastic year with athletics, even under Covid conditions! Thank you both! FSA is very fortunate to have you both! Just like athletics, coordinating and performing our drama plays were also very challenging this year. However, thanks to our amazing drama teachers Ms. Meyers and Mrs. Villegas, our drama students had a fantastic year and produced several high-quality plays for our school community, even under these challenging times of Covid. A huge shout to these awesome teachers for their innovative approaches and excellent work. Also a big THANK YOU to Mrs. Otim for always being an encouragement for our fine arts program activities including drama.
I also want to express my gratitude to our wonderful MSO. Today our MSO treated our students to a delicious ice cream treat! Thank you all for all of the hard work that you have put in during such a challenging year!

FSA Senior Named One of the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Winners
[On May 12th,] National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) announced this year’s National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners. The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of some 16,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program.
National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®); contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
NMSC finances most of these single-payment National Merit $2500 Scholarships. Corporations and company foundations that sponsor awards through NMSC also help underwrite these scholarships with grants they provide in lieu of paying administrative fees. Scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
2021 National Merit Scholarship Competition
This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2019 when over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists on a state- representational basis. Only these approximately 17,000 Semifinalists had an opportunity to continue in the competition.
From the Semifinalist group, some 16,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. By the conclusion of the 2021 program, about 7,500 Finalists will have earned the “Merit Scholar” title and received a total of nearly $30 million in college scholarships.
NMSC, a not-for-profit corporation that operates without government assistance, was founded in 1955 specifically to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program. The majority of scholarships offered each year are underwritten by approximately 400 independent corporate and college sponsors that share NMSC’s goals of honoring scholastically talented youth and encouraging academic excellence at all levels of education.

S.T.E.A.M Day Event Highlight - Language Arts
For Language Arts, students completed two activities. In "Snake Oil," two students were selected to be sales people. These sales people were given two randomly generated nouns (like "lightning pencil" or "heart fan"). Then, the rest of the students were given a randomly generated occupation (like "cheerleaders" or "teachers"). Each salesperson then had to give a 30 second pitch persuading their audience to buy their product. Students voted on which pitch was most persuasive.
In "Superfight," two students were paired together and each spun an idea wheel that gave them each a character/historical figure, a strength, and a weakness. Once prepared, students had 2 minutes to debate, in character and exhibiting their traits, in order to convince the audience that they were the stronger opponent. At the end of the 2 minutes, the audience voted on the strongest debater!
Project Oxygen - For India (Student Led Initiative)
Hello. My name is Ritvik and I study in 6th grade and I would like to raise money for the oxygen concentrators that will be sent to India.
India is in the midst of an unimaginable COVID crisis with hospitals running out of beds and oxygen. Although this is worldwide news, and countries across the globe are being alerted of the terrible situation in India, the reality is much more severe. Every day, I hear sad stories from my family in India, and I want to help in any way I can. Which is why I have collaborated with WIN (Women’s Initiative Network) - Project Oxygen, in order to raise money for this noble cause.
A little about WIN – They are a group of women doctors, entrepreneurs, and professionals who are committed to supplying 2000+ lifesaving oxygen concentrators to cities most affected by the COVID crisis in India. Along with their partner organizations, they have already sent 325 oxygen concentrators to India and 1000 more are ready to be shipped. The units are being procured in the USA and shipped directly to the cities where they are distributed by their partner NGO to individuals with verified need. When the individual recovers, the units are reclaimed and directed to others.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
