Physical Education
Hi! My name is Ms. Bobola and I graduated from Rhode Island College in May 2023, with a certification in Health and Physical Education as well as Adapted Physical Education. Since then, I have worked in numerous districts such as Doran Community School in Fall River, Seekonk High School, and Narragansett Pier Middle School. Along with Mrs. Arruda, I will be teaching Physical Education and Health! To learn more about my policies and what your student will be experiencing during Health and PE, please read the attached letter: Family Letter
Hi! I am Mrs. Arruda. I am your part time PE teacher this year. I have been a Health/PE teacher since 1985. I graduated from URI and attended Providence college for masters classes in Special Education. I started in Portsmouth in 1989 at PHS. I later worked at Melville and Elmhurst. I have been here at Hathaway since Elmhurst closed.
One class from every grade will be having PE twice per week for one quarter of the year. The other quarters will be one PE and one Health class. Learners please remember your sneakers and comfortable clothes for PE and Health.
Please feel free to email us with any questions or comments.
Music
- This curriculum overview lists the skills and concepts we will develop in each grade.
- Grade 4 students progress this continuum of learning to begin to read music on the 5-line staff through weekly recorder instruction beginning September 20. We also learn that practice and persistence makes progress!
- Grade 4 chorus will take place in the fall. Grade 3 chorus will take place in the spring.
- If at any time your child shows desire to learn an instrument outside of our music lessons, this list of area private lesson teachers (piano, violin, guitar, voice) are available.
- The Newport County Youth Chorus is free and open to students grades 2 and up (their season begins September 25).
Please reach out at anytime if you have any concerns, questions, or something to share!
Art
Welcome to Art! Students at Hathaway will become artists in the Art room once a week. Here they will focus on building their art making skills while exercising their self expression and creativity muscles to create inventive and original works of art.
The art curriculum is designed to build on art skills, concepts, and experiences as students advance through the grades. Students enjoy reflecting when viewing original works of art and design. Exploring art history and the art and design that surrounds us in our everyday lives inspires students to observe, think critically, and discuss respectfully. These are all the key elements of the Common Core approach to learning. Art Appreciation and having students reflect and voice their opinions when viewing works of art are encouraged and shared with each other.
Art work will be sent home every trimester in order for parents to view their work in art class. Reach out to me anytime with questions, concerns, or something exciting to share!
Library Media
Welcome to the library!
All students will come to the library once a week for their library class where we will build our library skills. Library skills include the safe and effective use of technology, creative media creation, finding resources and information, and the exploration of a variety of global stories. More information on the library standards can be found here and here.
The four areas of the library standards are:
- Think: "We are thinkers and designers".
- Create: "We are readers, writers, and creators in multiple formats".
- Share: "We are citizens".
- Grow: "We are confident, independent learners".
Students will also be given the opportunity to borrow library books! A few notes about library circulation:
Students should return their library books during their next library class. If they are not done reading them, they should still bring them to the library so I can renew the books for the student.
Students will receive lessons on taking care of their library books. The most frequent cause of damage to library books is a water bottle in the backpack spilling on them.
We will also discuss choosing ‘just right’ books! Students are not denied books based on reading level; I want to encourage student choice in picking out their library books. If you have any concerns about the books your child is choosing from the library, please reach out to me.
