A Letter From Our Principal
For those new to Southeast, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Terri Deayon and I’m the proud principal of Southeast. The 2019-2020 school year marks my 19th year in education. I was born and raised in St. Joseph, MO. Prior to becoming a principal, the majority of my teaching experience was as a 6th grade teacher. I served as the principal at Edison Elementary School, in St. Joseph, for five years prior to transitioning to the Park Hill School District. This upcoming year will be my second year as he principal at Southeast.
Southeast Elementary School is a great place to learn. Our goal is to challenge your children intellectually, grow them socially, and guide them toward independent thinking and problem solving. We will encourage students to demonstrate their best effort, attitude, and behavior every moment of every day, as they make positive contributions to Southeast Elementary. Every parent is an important member of the Southeast community and can do their part
in helping to create a successful school experience. Please join us in partnering together to support your child’s educational educational journey.
I am looking forward to meeting our new Southeast students and families. Education is a team effort between parents/guardians and the school. I am fortunate to work alongside such fantastic staff members, students, and families! Let’s make 2019-2020 a school year to remember!
Your partner in education,
Terri Deayon
New Assistant Principal
Sarah Sieminski is joining the Southeast family this school year as our full-time assistant principal! She has been part of the Park Hill School District since she began her education back in kindergarten! Sarah was born and raised in the Park Hill School District and attended Prairie Point, Plaza, Congress, and Park Hill. Prior to becoming the assistant principal at Line Creek in 2018, Sarah taught 4th grade, 3rd grade, and kindergarten. While in the classroom, Sarah wrote curriculum for our district and served on several building and district-level leadership teams. She received the Park Hill Star Award in 2017.
Did You Know?
If your family has completed the annual residency verification process, you should have received placement information with this publication.
All Park Hill families are required to complete the online residency verification process before student enrollment is finalized and a class placement is made. We are unable to send classroom placement information to households who have not verified residency.
If you did not receive class placement information, please call the school office at 816-359-4360 to verify residency within the Park Hill School District. All Park Hill families must provide a copy of your lease or mortgage statement and one utility bill. Students will not be permitted to begin the 2018-2019 school year without having this verification of residency.
Contact Information
Please make sure the Southeast office has up-to-date contact information, throughout the school year. In addition to parents/guardians, we should always have at least two current emergency contacts on file.
Student Badges
This year, teachers will keep track of students without badges. If a student does not have their badge for a third day, the student will be sent to the office during their recess. Students will call their parents to make a plan to have a badge the following day. If they do not have their badge (or $5.00 for a replacement) the following day, students will return to the office during their recess. This will continue until an appropriate plan has been made and implemented. Students will be provided one replacement badge, if needed, free of charge. After the first free replacement badge, there will be a $5.00 fee for each additional badge issued.
Kindergarten Parent Orientation
Kindergarten Parent Orientation is on Thursday, Aug. 8th from 5:30-6:15 PM. This event is designed to provide parents a “sneak peek” at the upcoming year in kindergarten, to hear about curriculum, instruction, assessment and give an opportunity to ask questions. We ask that if students attend, they not bring school supplies at that time. Students will have the opportunity to bring supplies on Back to School Night, on August 12.
PTA will be hosting a BooHoo/Yahoo breakfast for Kindergarten parents on the first day of school, August 14, in the Media Center. This is a come and go event. Donuts, coffee, and juice will be served from 8:20-8:50 AM.
Back to School Night
On August 12, Southeast will host a Back to School Night/Open House. This is a time for you and your students to meet the teacher, drop off supplies, and receive important information. PTA, cafeteria personnel, and an Adventure Club representative, will all be available on that evening. This is an open house style format, so you can come and go anytime between 5:30 and 7:00 PM.
Parent Orientation
Orientation for 1st-5th grade parents will be held on Thursday, August 22. This night is specifically for parents to have time with the teacher and hear about the expectations in your child’s classroom. Classroom teachers will offer two sessions to accommodate families with more than one child.
Session One: 5:30-5:55 PM Session Two: 6:00-6:25 PM
Southeast School Hours
8:20 AM First Bell Rings
8:40 AM Tardy Bell Rings and School Officially Begins
3:30 PM Dismissal
Supervision of students begins at 8:20 AM. Please do not drop off students before 8:20. Students eating breakfast should report to the cafeteria between 8:20-8:40 AM.
Car riders should be dropped off and picked up on the side of the building. A staff member will greet students entering this way from 8:20-8:40 AM and 3:30-3:40 PM.
NW Northwood Road Construction
As you know, there is an extensive road construction project in progress on NW Northwood Road. Within the next week or so, our entry way into the Southeast parking lot, will be greatly impacted. This will be temporary, but will indeed affect us. We have been working with District Operations Director, the city construction crew, and the bus company to alter some of our arrival and dismissal procedures on school grounds, to help accommodate for this work.
Stay tuned for more information regarding temporary changes in our bus loop and car rider line. We are encouraging as many students as possible to ride the bus in order to ensure student safety and help eliminate any additional traffic congestion.
We apologize for any temporary inconvenience this may cause, but thank you, in advance, for your patience and understanding. We are grateful for your willingness to do your part to keep things running smoothly during this time.
Bus Transportation
Families will receive a communication from Nicole Kirby, Park Hill’s Director of Communication Services, detailing how to access your child’s bus transportation information. Please check your contact information in the parent portal (Infinite Campus), to ensure your contact information is up to date. If you have questions or concerns regarding bus issues, please contact First Student at 816-741-4023.
On the first day of school, each student is issued a colored wrist band with the bus number for students to wear on their wrist. This is an important safety feature to ensure that students get on the correct bus at the end of the school day. Students are encouraged to keep their wrist bands on for at least the first week of school.
Transportation Changes
If your student is going to have different transportation, a note or phone call from the parent must accompany the request. Please contact the office prior to 2pm to request a change in transportation. Bus changes will only be issued for changes in daycare or for the safety of the student. If an alternative person is checking out your student, the person must have their ID scanned.
If you are picking your child up prior to the end of the school day, please arrive in the office prior to 3pm. Parents who arrive after 3:10pm, will need to wait until dismissal begins for their child to be called out of class.
Car Riders
Students who will be car riders every day will be considered “every day car riders.” All parents will be given a placard at Back to School Night. The placard MUST be displayed in the front window of the vehicle so staff can identify the parent or guardian. During dismissal, these students will be dismissed through the cafeteria doors on the east side of the building. Staff members will supervise the car riders until a parent arrives.
We request that parents remain in cars and form a pick-up line in the side circle area. In order to eliminate congestion in the front office and keep students safe, we ask that you wait in the “car rider” line, in your car, and refrain from coming into the building to pick up your child unless it is an emergency situation. We want to keep students safe by eliminating the need for them walking in the parking lot with moving cars and buses.

Food Services: Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and lunch are served daily. Breakfast starts at 8:20 AM. Please refer to the monthly menu for specific meal selections. August menus will be available in classrooms at Back to School Night. Menus are also available here.
Park Hill offers automated prepayments to a child’s meal account via telephone or internet. Money can be applied to a child’s food service account so children will not need to carry cash to school. If you do not have your child’s meal pay number, please contact the office. Adults using this system may also view a child’s purchases, account activity and set up e-mail notifications for low account balances. Please note: A $2 service fee is charged per transaction regardless of the amount being added to the account. However, money can be applied to multiple student accounts for a single transaction fee. If that is not your preference, payment envelopes are available in the cafeteria. Parents who would like to set up a School Café Account can go to www.schoolcafe.com. You must have your student’s school, ID number, and birthdate to establish a School Café account.
An application of free/reduced meal pricing is available in the school office or on the School; Cafe online system. We encourage everyone who qualifies to complete an application.
Student Breakfast $1.50
Student Lunch $2.40
Milk $.60
Juice $.40
Adult Breakfast $2.00
Adult Lunch without milk $3.50
Image and Contact Information Opt-Out Designation
Throughout the school year, the district or school might take pictures or videos of special events or programs to be covered by the newspaper or television stations including Park Hill TV-Channel 18. Images and pictures may also be posted on the Park Hill or Southeast web or Facebook pages. If you do not want your child’s image or information used for these purposes, please request and fill out an “opt out” form with the school office. In addition, Southeast’s PTA publishes a school directory. If you do not want your child’s or family’s contact information included in the student directory, fill out this form to opt-out of the publication. If you have questions, please contact the school office.
Southeast Health Room
A health room is available if your child becomes ill or injured while at school. All nonprescription, over-the-counter medication must be sent in the original container with a written request by the parent or physician. If for any reason your child is on medication, the medication must be in a prescription labeled bottle accompanied by a doctor’s note, before it can be administered. The Medication Authorization Form must be completed and signed by the parent or guardian for all medications given at school. It is recommended that medication NOT be sent to school with children. Parents should bring the medication to the health room at school. The Southeast Registered Nurse, Cassie Grantham, will be available at Back to School Night to answer any questions you might have. Please keep her updated throughout the school year of any newly occurring/changes in health conditions, medications, or injuries that might result in restrictions, such as not being able to participate in P.E.
Birthday Treats
Birthday treats are always something students enjoy sharing with classes. In an effort to maximize instructional time and minimize food in classrooms, we enjoy serving birthday treats in the cafeteria during the students scheduled lunch time. Students may bring the treats to school with them, or parents can drop them off in the office. Students will pick them up on their way to the cafeteria to serve to classmates.
Reminder: All treats must be store-bought, pre-packaged items.
Early Release Dates
All elementary schools will have an early release, once a month, for our teachers to receive professional development focused on increasing student success. On early release dates, all elementary schools release at 1:30 PM. Below you will find the dates for the 2019-2020 school year. Early release transportation arrangements must be communicated with your child’s teacher. At Back to School Night forms will be available, for parents to complete, regarding after school and early release transportation arrangements. If transportation changes need to be made, throughout the year, please contact your child’s teacher or the Southeast Office.

Do You Know A Park Hill Star?
The Park Hill Star recognition program was started in 2015 to celebrate support staff and teachers whose work is especially noteworthy.
The following is an overview of the Park Hill Star Program:
Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.
That is why we present the Park Hill Star award once a month to a pre-K or elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a support employee.
Southeast Communication
You will find several ways to stay up to date on school activities throughout the year on the Southeast website , Facebook, Twitter and newsletters from your child’s teacher. You will also occasionally get an automated email or voicemail message sent to you by the school with important information and reminders. We know two-way communication is best, so please feel free to call, email, or stop by the school with any questions you may have regarding your child’s education.
