The Heritage High School Golden Spike Booster Club, in Frisco, is hosting the 2nd annual 5K for Gabe to raise scholarship money to honor our fallen teammate, Gabbriel Atao. Gabe was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in January 2017 at the age of 17. He was an exceptional student athlete who was loved by all. Not only was he a member of the Heritage Varsity Cross Country team and Track team, but he excelled academically as well. He was a member of the National Honor Society, DECA, student council, and the list goes on. He volunteered countless hours in our community. Gabe was able to save 4 lives through his organ donation.
Last year, our 1st annual 5K for Gabe raised over $17,000 and we were able to create an endowed scholarship in Gabe's name that will be awarded annually through the Frisco Education Foundation to a student athlete who exemplifies Gabe's characteristics. Our 2nd annual 5K for Gabe which will take place on April 22, 2018 at 9:00am at Heritage High School in Frisco. Our hope is to raise enough funds to create a second endowed scholarship in Gabe's name.
The event last year brought students from a number of schools and different communities together. We hope to encourage the same participation this April. Plans are well under way and we believe that this event will be even bigger than last year since 2018 is the year that Gabe would have graduated from Heritage High School.
