A Message from the WSD Administration

Unified Sports

By Carter Smith

Play Unified. Live Unified.

Special Olympics Unified Sports® brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to train and compete on the same team. (SpecialOlympicsVT). In the past, WCS participants were in grades 5-8. Because our students’ experience has been so successful, this year we are opening it up to our 3rd and 4th grade athletes.

Special Olympics Unified Schools is an education and sports based strategy powered by an engaged youth community that increases athletic and leadership opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities, while creating communities of acceptance for all.

At WCS this fall we will have 15-18 students as athletes and partners with and without intellectual disabilities training and competing on the same team. In the fall we train for bowling to get ready for the Unified Tournament that takes place in Barre, VT on December 12, 2016.

We start practice this week and practice on Wednesdays. We will practice at Spare Time in Colchester 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/30, 12/7 and Tournament on 12/12.

In the spring we train and play bocce ball together. We typically start practicing at the end of March and participate in the Unified Bocce tournament on May 25, 2017 in St Albans.

On February 2016 WCS participated in the Penguin Plunge. These fundraising efforts help break down barriers for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and provide life changing sports training and competition opportunities. WCS Unified Sports Team benefits from money raised through this event. WCS Wildcats will have a team to plunge this year on February 4, 2017.

Jodi Bartley and Jess Haskins are co-coaching this year. Thanks to Jodi for supplying the information for the majority of this article. Feel free to contact them for additional information or if you have athletes or partners in mind.

And before you leave this section- Many of our Williston Central graduates participated in the championship basketball game and brought home the gold medal. I saw our student athlete Ben Townley in the grocery store after the game, still in his uniform and still with his medal around his neck. He was more than mildly excited!

WCS Renovation Bond

The Williston School board is proposing a bond to renovate Williston Central School

What will the impact on my taxes be if the bond passes, and over how many years?

  • The $19.85 million dollar bond is a 20 year term, and should cost Williston taxpayers approximately $160.00/year for a house appraised at $400,000.
  • While the overall tax increase from the additional cost of the bond is the $160 per year for a $400,000 home, due to benefits of consolidation homeowners tax bills are forecasted to go down year to year.
The Bond vote will be on the election November 8th, 2016. A pre-vote informational meeting will be held November 3rd in the WCS Dining Room at 6 p.m.

Three Main Goals for the Renovation

  1. To provide a safe and healthy environment for learning
  2. To repair and renew this community asset for current and future generations
  3. To reduce environmental impacts and operating costs

Odyssey of the Mind Coaches Needed

The Odyssey of the Mind program focuses on learning how to solve problems using each student’s creative talents and skills. Teams of 5-7 students are challenged to solve a Long-Term Problem over a period of several months, and then present their creative and unique solution before a panel of Judges at the annual Vermont State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament in March. Problems range in focus to appeal to a variety of students.

Odyssey of the Mind teams are typically coached by parents. Teams meet outside of the school day. More information can be found at

If you are interested in coaching a team for Williston Central School, please contact Design & Technology teacher, Leah Joly at

Teal Pumpkin Project

With Fall comes trick or treating. Try a new tactic this year, GO TEAL. By that I mean the Teal Pumpkin Project . This is a program developed by FARE. It stands for Food, Allergy, Research & Education.

The Teal Pumpkin Project offers alternatives to those "traditional" trick or treating goodies. This program strives to include those children with food allergies.
Go to the website linked above and see what it has to offer. Consider posting a sign and offering treats or toys to those children who can't eat the usual goodies. Stop by Allen Brook School front foyer for information as well. Happy "safe" treating.
Four Winds Nature News Monthly Topic
