Greetings from the Principal
Dear Riverview families,
Today, Riverview experienced an unexpected power outage that lasted about an hour. With minor adjustments to the day, teachers were able to continue their lessons, and students were able to continue learning. Thank you for your trust in Riverview's ability to keep students safe, comfortable, academically engaged, and to continue the school day as planned once power was restored.
It is 'Peace and Kindness Week' at Riverview, and this month students will be learning how to recognize bullying behavior, how to prevent it, how to stand up to bullies, and how to report bullying. Bullying is not just something that teenagers go through, and it is not just a physical act. Anyone can be capable of bullying behavior and it has a serious impact on both boys and girls.
Riverview's anti-bullying efforts have several elements, with an emphasis on prevention. Our staff aim to develop an environment of trust through meaningful interactions with all students. Staff members model respectful behavior toward others, and respond in a consistent, caring manner to student concerns. Adults supervise areas throughout the school and the school day. Intentional student instruction is given that clearly defines bullying behavior, teaches pro-social acceptable behavior and conflict resolution, encourages reporting, and discourages students from being bystanders. Students also receive positive recognition for displaying appropriate social skills, and character education classroom lessons are provided by our counselor, Ms. Munsey.
While we make every effort in preventing bullying, we also want our students to know that they will be supported to speak out if they or someone they know is being bullied. If a child tells you they are being bullied, take what they say seriously. The only way to stop bullying is to acknowledge that it happens. We strive to create a culture in our school where any hurtful behavior is quickly identified and stopped.
Please be sure to click on the ‘Special Edition Newsletter’ from Ms. Munsey further down in this Falcon
Make it a great week!

Staff Spotlight....Mrs. Dondzila
I've been so excited to join the Riverview staff this year teaching fifth grade. As a Riverview parent for several years, I have loved being a part of this community and school district. My oldest child, Olivia, is a fifth grader and my son, Gray, is a 3rd grader this year. My youngest child, Lucy just turned one and has been the most delightful addition to our family.
This is my 12th year teaching and now I have taught every grade except for K & 4th! The last two years I taught at Starside, another elementary school also in our district. The majority of my teaching years was with the Center School District. However, once my children started school at Riverview, I knew I wanted to be on staff for this district.
I met my husband, Andy at MU and we have been married for 16 years. I received my Masters in Curriculum & Instruction from UMKC and also participated in a Family Studies program.
My favorite way to spend time is to eat delicious food with friends and family, shop, and read.
I love teaching fifth graders here at Riverview!
Tech Talk: Technology Integration in Fifth Grade
Fifth grade takes an integrated approach to technology for students to have daily opportunities to enhance our curriculum. Specifically, fifth graders use technology to conduct research and chose from a variety of web-sites to research the author’s inspiration for writing the historical fiction novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. Students identified main ideas throughout the articles as well as recorded further questions while building background and motivation for the text.
On a daily basis, students use technology to build fact fluency and concept development in an appealing way to 21st century learners through web-sites like Moby Max, Xtra Math, and Front Row. Students are also given the opportunity to practice and master vocabulary words through activities that are individualized and at their own pace on Spelling City. Fifth grade looks forward to implementing BYOD in the near future to further develop specific Social Studies and Science projects!
