Te Aroha Primary Newsletter
Term 2 Week 1 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora parents and whanau
Welcome back to the start of term two. This term sees the start of the winter sports programme in our school and at the various clubs in town. I would like to encourage you to enrol you child in a sport which helps children to be fit and healthy.
Hockey, soccer and rugby are run through the various clubs in town and netball is organised by the school.
LUNCH IN SCHOOLS PROGRAMME
By the time you receive this newsletter we would have had the first delivery of lunches in schools for our children. We are very excited about being able to offer this service to our students and to you as parents. We are the only school in Te Aroha offering this service so we feel very privileged in being able to do this.- Check out the menu at the end of this newsletter.
Attendance/Absenteeism
We appreciate knowing why your child is absent from school, which can be done via text to the school mobile, a message on the school phone or school app or a phone call through to the school office.
It is very important that we know where your child is each day and if he/she is absent we need to be informed. This is a Health and Safety issue as if we can't make contact with you and have not received a message from you we will refer this to the police to follow up as we need to know that your child is safe and that nothing has happened on the way to school.
Please know that we understand that there are many reasons for children being absent from school, such as sickness and bereavements. For students who have been absent for a number of days throughout the term, you will receive a letter in the mail in regard to this.
Achievement is linked to regularly attending school and whilst you may have had the opportunity to talk about this with your child's teacher at Learning Discussions, please feel welcome to make contact with your child's teacher to discuss this further.
Covid 19 / Coronavirus
As always anyone who is unwell should not be at school.
If your child has a cough or a cold they must not be sent to school. They need to be kept at home until they have recovered completely. We are having to phone an increasing number of parents to pick their child up because they are unwell.
If you have a particular concern about your child, you can contact Healthline at 0800 611 116 or their GP for medical advice.
SCHOOL APP
Please download this app to your phone as it will become one of the important parts of our emergency contact procedure should we ever need to use it.
SPORT
Netball begins this Saturday and I am awaiting more details about times and duties. Thank you to those who started paying off their fees as we need these to start netball. All practices for year 5-8 will take place on Tuesdays at lunchtimes. Each girl will need her playing shoes at school for practice. Please support your child's coach by ensuring your child has them at school. It does take a while to build good habits and this is where we need your help.
We have been asked to inform our parents that, while we love your support on Saturdays, no coach/ parent is allowed to walk up and down the sideline coaching, and please no one is to stand behind the goals. We do encourage parents to stay at the courts for the game. Coaches and Managers are only responsible 'between the whistle' !
Yr 7/8 Technology at Te Aroha College
This resumes this Friday. Please make sure your child is at school at 8.30am with long hair tied back and shoes that cover your child's foot. (no slides please) If you are dropping your child off at the College, please contact our office or contact your child's teacher via Seesaw.

Lest we forget.
Thank you to our students, who proudly represented our school this morning at the ANZAC Parade. Lovely to have a number of parents and teachers join this group of students. Special mention of Calan and Baraka, who laid flowers on behalf of our school community at the town clock.

Classroom Round Ups
Welcome back everyone. We have an exciting term planned. A separate letter has come home today explaining the changes to our reading programme in class from this term. We have a big emphasis on phonemic awareness, knowing letters/ sounds, blending words and handwriting. In Maths we are learning the basics of telling time - sequence events, days of the week and tell time to the hour. We begin a unit on Me and My Environment, this week, together. we are making a map of our school environment
Rm 2 Miss Green
Welcome back, I hope everyone had a great break! A massive welcome to Kaia, Nikylah, Kupa, Tiana and Poppy who are with us for the remainder of the year. We will spend this week getting to know each other, practising routines and settling back into school. Our reading programme will look different this term. A notice is going home today to give you more information on this. Homework will also look different this term. We begin looking at our inquiry for the term, me in my environment. We will document this on Seesaw. Our phonics letters this week are s, a, t, p. Revising these sounds and how to write them at home would be a great help.
Rm 3 Miss Swan
Kia ora koutou,
Welcome back! I hope you have all had a fantastic school holiday. Term 2 is going to be super busy with lots of exciting learning! We have a big focus on phonological awareness (letter sounds) in Room 3 this term. This focus will help us with our reading and writing goals.
Writing: We are beginning to look at report writing and will be learning about many different animals and insects throughout the term.
Maths: We are going to practice a variety of addition and subtraction number strategies this week in our maths groups.
Reading: Reading books will be coming home and each child will have spelling words to learn in their homework book. I really appreciate your support with homework tasks. It really makes a difference to your child’s learning. We are also looking more closely at word work activities during guided reading time this week. Inquiry: Our topic is Me and my Environment. Our task this week is to make a collaborative map of our school.
Reminders for the week: Library day continues to be Friday this term. Dolores Maisey will be in our class on Thursday. Please make sure children are being sent with their school jersey and warm socks as it has started to get very cold! I hope you all have an amazing first week back. Please remember you can contact me via Seesaw or email mswan@tearohaprimary.school.nz
Rm 5 Miss Entwisle
Welcome back! We hope you had a safe and relaxed break and that everyone is refreshed for the start of Term 2. For those interested in ‘homework’ the children have been signed up and have online access to the following educational sites: Mathletics, Code Avengers, Epic, Sumdog, Studyladder and Sunshine Classics. These sites cover reading, mathematics, spelling and ICT skills. Our spelling words for the week will be shared via Seesaw at the start of each week so that children can learn these at home (we will be learning them in class each day too). For those looking for ‘unplugged’ activities please refer to the ‘Learning Ideas for Home’ booklets that were issued to each student in Term 1.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me via email at mentwisle@tearohaprimary.school.nz or through the Seesaw message function.
Rm 6 Mrs Bankier
Mrs Bankier is still away recovering from a very serious shoulder injury. Mrs Bartram will be relieving while she is away.
Rm 7 Mrs Paul
Welcome back to Term 2 and I hope you all had a wonderful break. A big thank you to those of you who stepped up and helped us represent our school at the ANZAC parade and who tasted the new lunch food for us!!
This Term we will be starting a new spelling programme that looks very much at the sounds within words. We will all start together until we work out the logistics, and the children will be learning words in small groups. In Maths we will be starting with multiplication and division. I need to stress the importance of learning timestables. I did send out a message before the holidays and am really hoping to see a big improvement in this. Your child will have tables to learn every night and they need your help please. As boring as they can sometimes seem, they are a VERY necessary part of maths. In writing we will be focusing on 'Writing to inform' which gives the children a real chance to write about things that interest them. Our new Topic work will begin on Tuesday- ask your child about it!!

LUNCH IN SCHOOLS PROGRAMME
LUNCH IN SCHOOLS PROGRAMME
Kia ora whanau
I am very pleased to be able to inform our parents that the Lunch in School programme for our school starts this term. The company contracted to supply the lunches is Libelle and they have been providing lunches to schools for a number of years and provide a balanced and nutritious meal for our children.
Below is the menu for Week 1 starting today - Monday 3 May.
A few things to note regarding the provision of food for children at our school for parents to note:
- Please note that our Breakfast Club will continue to operate each morning before school as usual.
- You are also asked to continue providing your child with a morning tea snack and a snack for our Kai break.
- Lunch will be provided for your child each day from Monday to Friday from Monday 3 May until the end of the year.
- The lunch menu for the following week will be put on the school App by Friday of the week prior to serving so that you know if you want to add anything extra yourself, into your child's lunch box.
We have passed on the information you supplied us on the dietary needs sheet which each parent was asked to complete for each of their children, to Libelle.
Te Moananui A Kiwa (Hub 3) - Mural
Te Moananui A Kiwa (Hub 3) is extremely proud to share their beautiful mural with our community. This project began last year with Mrs Gamble working with a small group of students and has been finished this year with the input of every student in our Hub.
Today was very special, with a visit from past pupil and author, Nadine Uerata, who after sharing her book with us last year, was able to see the inspirational messages our students have written to motivate and guide them this year on a successful journey.
