PLC - Collaborative Norms
Presume Positive Intent
Assuming that others' intentions are positive promotes and facilitates meaningful dialogue and discussion, and prevents unintentional put-downs. Using positive intentions in speech is one manifestation of this norm.
Put Ideas on the Table
Ideas are the heart of meaningful dialogue and discussion. Label the intention of your comments. For example: "Here is one idea..." or "One thought I have is ..." or "Here is a possible approach..."" or "Another consideration might be ..."
There will be table tents for each team to have visible at meetings to support the practice of these norms to support collaboration.

iReady Testing Coming Soon!
- goal setting for growth on iReady
- focused practice with iReady license use (tracking minutes and pass rates)
- intentional small and whole group instruction to address standards
- creating a community of learners who are focused on growth
It Will Be So Exciting To See All The Growth From Your Incredibly Hard Work!
The testing window opens next week. Be sure you take time to get students in the right frame-of-mind to do their best:
- review of individual goals and your classroom goals, reminder that they want to do well for THEMSELVES to be proud of their work
- discussion of what it looks/feels like to "give it your best effort"
- the environment is focused and free of distractions during testing
- give test in chunks instead of one long extended time
How will you celebrate within your class: extra recess time? special classroom celebration?
- Students who make at least half of the "typical growth" will receive a certificate of recognition at the January PBS Assembly
Academic Goals and Data
- 80% of students on iReady reading licenses are passing lessons with a 70-100%.
50% of our students on level based on April iReady assessment data, increasing from 44% of our students on level in math in April 2019 .
- 95% of students on iReady math licenses are passing lessons with a 70-100%.
5th grade students will perform at or above the state average on science MAP test in spring 2020.
Curriculum Feedback Wanted
- Do we need to rearrange the sequence of lessons?
- Do you need additional resources?
- Do we need to review specific resources used?
- Do we need clarification about expectations with a resource?
Change in the Cafeteria
- The salad bar will be in the same location as the condiments are currently. The condiments will be placed on a small table at the end of the salad bar.
- The salad bar will be in the cafeteria soon, but will NOT be used for any food distribution until Jan. 16th.
- On Jan. 16th, we will begin to offer "grab and go" options available on the salad bar. The "grab and go" options might be clementines, bagged apple slices, bagged carrots, applesauce containers, etc.
- Based on how students respond and handle this "grab and go" option, we will eventually offer students served options on the salad bar. These options would require students to use tongs or a spoon to serve and might be: sliced fresh fruit and vegetables.
- We will notify all staff BEFORE we increase options on the salad bar so teachers have a chance to prepare students.
- The staff salad bar will REMAIN in its current location. It will not be incorporated into the student salad bar.
TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS WITH THIS CHANGE, HERE ARE A FEW THINGS WE WILL NEED TO DO:
- lunchroom supervisors will need to be sure to talk with students about the salad bar area and upcoming options available
- classroom teachers will need to talk with students about the salad bar, reminders about importance of hygiene and manners.
- lunchroom supervisors and classroom teachers talk with students about taking what you want BUT making sure you eat what you take. (We will need to monitor for students who take a lot and are NOT eating it. We don't want added waste!)
Classroom teachers can build this into morning meeting and lunchroom supervisors can talk to students while they are eating.
Book Study Highlight
We will discuss chapters 7 and 8 from Help for Billy at our staff meeting on January 22.
Kelly's Koaching Korner -
iReady testing window will be January 13-24th.
Encourage Students during the Diagnostic
What does it really mean to proctor? It’s more than ensuring students are on track. Active proctoring is an opportunity to support important skills, like showing work, self-checking responses, and keeping a growth mindset during moments of frustration. Share this checklist of tips with teachers while administering the Diagnostic.
Review the proctoring checklist for the Diagnostic.
Help Students Talk about Their Data
When students talk about their data, they take ownership of their progress and areas for growth. Having data chats with students allows them to reflect on results from the first Diagnostic and set goals for the next. Encourage teachers to use these data chats to help guide these conversations.
Have Students Commit to Do Their Best
Now that students have reflected on their data, it’s time to have them commit to their goals on paper. Have teachers use pledge sheets with students and have them promise to do their best on the Diagnostic.
Use pledge sheets with students.
Google Cast
Tonya came over to support adding Google Cast to teacher computers in grades 3-5. She will be here on Monday, January 13th from 3:00-3:30 in the library. This time will be devoted to supporting you in using Google Cast and how your students can easily use it from their Chromebook.
Shout Outs for Staff
Thank you to everyone for your hard work this week! What a great first week back...you all make this such a great place to work.
Thanks for great JEPD this week and your hard work for MAP prep. You all are working so hard, let's show them what we can do!
Dawn's Dish
Fire Marshal and Drills
- extension cords should not be used, but surge protector cords are acceptable
- curtains should not be up
- hanging lights should be removed
- nothing can be on radiator vents (this is a fire hazard)
- make sure that your room can be easily maneuvered...have desks in small groups or small rows with space in between allowing students to exit the room in a safe and quickly manner
- your room should be free of clutter...this means you should have the perimeter of the room free of stacks of things, bookcases, etc. should be neat and organized
We still have 5 drills left to do. We are now REQUIRED to use the actual fire alarm when we run a drill. Moving forward we will be utilizing the actual alarm. You will want to prepare your students for this ahead of time.
Our next drill is January 22. We will have the drill around 8:30 am.
The Maxwell Daily Reader - The Law of Priorities
- What is required? What must I do that nobody can or should do for me?
- What gives the greatest return? Work in your areas of greatest strength. Is there something you're doing that can be done 80 percent as well by someone else? If so, delegate it.
- What brings the greatest reward? Life is too short not to do some things you love. What energizes you and keeps you passionate?
TODAY GIVE YOUR TIME ONLY TO THINGS THAT PASS THE REQUIREMENT, RETURN, REWARD TEST.
