Flu Season in Alaska-Hand Washing Campaign
Flu season has arrived in Alaska. Mid-January saw a sharp spike in influenza cases, and the absence rate in our District is high. Typically, we have about 7% of our students absent. The second week in February had an average of 17% absent, with rates over 20% in several schools. While absence rates seem a little better, we still need to be promoting washing your hands, covering your mouth and nose with a sleeve when coughing, and staying home when you feel sick. Teach kids to sing “Happy Clean Hands to Me” (tune of Birthday Song) while they wash to ensure they are spending adequate time. Stay well.
