A message from Mrs. Bolz: Developing a Growth Mindset
I shared some information with our staff recently about helping students develop a growth mindset. The following excerpt from an article entitle 5 Strategies for Building a Growth Mindset in Your Child by Shaleena Tareen sums up the definition of a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset:
Psychologist Carol Dweck, a researcher at Stanford University, says there are two types of mindsets: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. People with a fixed mindset believe that their abilities – mental or physical – are fixed. These people tend to make little effort toward improving their current skillset. People with a growth mindset believe that their intelligence and other skills grow with time. They realize that their effort has a direct impact on their success. As a result, they are more likely to see failure as something they can learn from.
Help your child see that growth takes work, and work comes with mistakes. These mistakes lead to more learning which will eventually lead to mastery of that new skill or concept.
Included here is a grid of questions that you can use with your child to help them think and dig deeper to develop their growth mindset.

Veterans Day of Remembrance November 11th
All Dodd students will attend the Veterans' Day of Remembrance Program on Thursday, November 11th. Students and staff will walk to Bobcat Stadium and sit in the stands for the event. We will honor the men and women who have served our country as well as the fallen heroes who have given their lives for our freedom. The presentation will consist of a guest speaker and performances by select student groups and organizations. Dodd 5th grade students will sing a patriotic song as their contribution to the program.
There will be reserved seating on the field for any veteran that can attend. We want to honor your service, and hope you can join us! *Assistance will be provided at the stadium to those who need it.
Please send warm clothes for your child as we will be sitting outside for approximately 1.5 hours.
Turkey Trot November 19th 1:00-2:30
Dodd Elementary will have their annual Turkey Trot on Friday, November 19th to continue the implementation of our health curriculum CATCH.
We are inviting all parents and community members to TROT on over to Dodd and walk/jog our course with your child to emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
The start line will begin in the parking lot on the west side of Dodd. Sign in outside the west doors by the parking lot Friday morning if you are planning to run the course. Please park in the visitor’s parking lot (gravel lot) across from Dodd. The finish line will be the same as in years past (the back gate to our playground area).
