What's Happening??!!

~ Hawley School Newsletter: October 18, 2020 ~

From the Desk of Mr. Moretti.....

Dear Hawley Parents/Guardians, Teachers, and Staff,

Hybrid was weird but we rocked it. We are now All In, with some Distant Learners, and we are hitting our stride. 95% of students have returned to In Person Learning. We continue to grow and adapt to make the year as "normal" as we can. The kids just love being in school, and we just love having them.

Buckle up, keep your hands and feet in the car at all times, and stay seated as you read on to find out What's Happening at Hawley .......

~ Temporary Remote Learner ~

With most students returning for In Person Learning, and parents keeping sick students home out of an abundance of caution, we wanted to find a way for those students that are home sick to still access instruction. Dr. Rodrigue sent home an email outlining the protocol which I then followed up with a video. If you did not have a chance to watch the video, you can click here to see it. Below is a summary of the protocol for Temporary Remote Learning due to Absences:

First, we do not want students sent to school if they are sick. All parents have been taking an abundance of caution and we thank you for that. So, if you as the parent feel it is best for your child to stay home- I agree and support that decision. You need to contact the main office (by 10:00 am of an absence) as you always have been asked to do. That is the communication that I will use to begin activating short term distance learning. You certainly can email the teacher as well as a heads-up, but do not expect a reply at night or over a weekend, and the office is the important notification. Please state if you think it is only a 1 day illness or a multi-day illness. I know that you may not know at that moment but do your best to judge. If it is a 1 day illness, the student will not be a distant learner. It is OK to have an absence, this year, you probably will have many. We are not focusing as closely on the number of absences as in the past, these are unique circumstances.

If a student is going to be out for multiple days because they have COVID or are quarantining or have the flu, and you think they can do work, we will accommodate them as a temporary distant learner. We do need 24 hours to, in some cases, make and post a Google Link since there are some classes without distant learners currently, but more importantly, we need the time to plan, prepare, create student work that is relevant. It then needs to be copied, scanned and uploaded into the Google Classroom. It also includes specials and any support services a student may require. We will do it, the 2nd day and on. And, if we are going to do this, it is important that the child logs in on-time and participates all day.

Also, if you have a unique family situation that perhaps we can accommodate, please feel free to reach out to me. Thank you for your understanding that we can not support a student becoming a distant learner for a just a one day absence or travel outside of the school vacations.

Mindfulness Bags

Being aware of and supporting student Emotional Health and Well-Being is of utmost important to us. We partnered with the PTA and gave each student a Mindfulness Bag. These bags contain items to help with anxiety or stress. Each bag contains a stress ball, silly putty, a small stuffed animal, a journal, self-affirmation cards and more. Our School Counselor, Mrs. Shapiro, is visiting every class to review the items and how they can be used and how they help. Thank You PTA!

~ Being As Normal As We Can ~

I know that it has been difficult for you not being in the school this year. It must be stressful imagining what is happening each day. Allow me to pull back the curtain so you see the Glory that is Hawley....
