2.-What is the book about?
The Plot
"The Witches" is a fantasy book written by Roald Dahl. In this book, a boy's parents die in a car crash and he goes to live in Norway with his grandmother. She tells him stories about witches and what things make witches differents and how to recognise them.
The boy's grandmother gets ill and they go a hotel on the coast of England to pass the summer holydays. While there, the annual Meeting of witches is in the same hotel and there are two hundreds witches.
By mistake the boy is locked in the room when the meeting is made and he listen the witches plan to turn children into a mouse by putting "Delayed-Action Mouse Maker" in chocolate bars in Candy shops all around England.
The witches demostrate "The Delayed-Action Mouse Maker" in a boy called Bruno and he turns into a mouse. Then the witches find him behind the screen and he is turned into a mouse too. After he becomes a mouse, he escape to the witch and goes to his grandmother's room.
He still has his human voice and comes up with a plan to put Mause-Maker into the witches' food. He goes to the Grand High Witch's room and steal some Delayed Action Mouse -MAker then he goes into the kitchen and dumps it into the witches' soup. All the witches turn into a mouse and are chased out of the hotel.
The boy is left a mouse for the rest of his life and he and her grandmother go back home and dedícate their lives to ridding the world of witches.
3.-Characters
Most Interesting: The Boy
In my opinión the most interesting character is the boy because their parents are died. He is now alone only with his grandmother and if it isn't even more he is become a mouse. But he accepts this new situation and he really enjoys in his new life. I think a sad but on the other hand lovely part of the book is in when the boy asks her grandmother how long lives a mouse and his grandmother says more or less 9 years and he responds:"Good!" "That´s great! It's the best news I've ever had! Because I would never want to live longer than you"
Most unatractive: Bruno Jenkins
Bruno is a greedy boy, always eating wherever you meet him as well he likes boast all the time about his rich father and in addiction to this he is a cruel boy who likes roast ants and little animals.
Other characters
The grandmother: Is kind and good person. She is the secondary character who has to look after his grandson because his daughter died in a crash car. But she isn't the tipical grandmother. She smokes and she thinks that the boys mustn't to take a bath every day.
Mr and Mrs Jenkins: The parents of Bruno Jenkins are conceited, coarse and a very prim people.
The Grant High Witch: is the antagonist character,is more ugly than is so difficult to imagine how she is.But on the other hand she is humoristic character because speaks extended the "r" and changes the "W" as "V" and is fun to read it.
Mr Stringer:Is the manager to the hotel and he runs after the boy all the time.
4.- The Best Chapter
In the Kitchen
In the kitchen is a very exciting chapter, is when the boy who is turned into a mouse had to put "the mouse maker Delayed action" in the soup to the dinner of the witches in order to turn them in mouse too and when he had been put it he was discovered, had to run to escape and in the flight someone cut his tail.
5.- Interesting Vocabulary
He uses a lot of rhyming words and lots of adjectives to describe each situation for example: In page number 7 he writes: "....be plotting, and scheming and churming and burning and whizzing with murderous bloodthirsty thoughts."
In the page 66, when the boy is describing how the witches are he writes:"...so crumpled and wizened, so shrunken and shrivelled, it looked as thought it had been pickled in vinegar
6.- General Opinion
The witches by Roald Dahl is a fantastic story that takes places in London and Norway. This enjoyable book show us a lesson that how the appearences sometimes makes wrong idea that the person really are. Because the wicthes seem pretty, kind and nice on the outside but inside it is a different story.
If you love a amusing books it is highly entertaining read. Don't miss it. This book is full of humoristic and irony moments. For example when the grandmother says: "...you'll never catch a cold if you smoke cigars". As the author creates a dinamic reading that you are hooked and you can't stopped to read.
I definetelly recomend that you add this to your collection, this book makes readers take cautions that people about judging others by their appereances.
