RMS Wildcat Weekly
March 27, 2020 Information for our Families
VUSD SCHOOL CLOSURES
Based on consultation with the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego County Health and Human Services, Vista Unified School District closed all schools until further notice and pending health and safety recommendations. This decision was made to curb the potential transmission of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Any updates on the status of school closures will continue to be communicated by the district office.
WE MISS OUR WILDCATS very much and are sending our best wishes for everyone's health and safety! While this is a challenging and unprecedented situation for all of us, it is comforting to know we have a strong community and that we are working together at Vista Unified and at Roosevelt Middle School to move forward with student learning and systems of supports for our students and families.
By now you should have received Dr. Doyle's most recent Community Health Alert #7 that he sent today to all families. It is a very informative update, so please read the letter thoroughly if you haven't yet had a chance.
Today you should have also received an email with information regarding upcoming Technology Distribution and a link to a required survey if you would like to check out a device. If you did not receive this email, here is the link to the LETTER FOR TECHNOLOGY DISTRIBUTION and to the SURVEY.
Remember that next week is our regularly scheduled Spring Break, so all school related activities will be closed. Teachers and staff will not be working, and students aren't required to complete school work, but they can surely work on optional learning opportunities if they would like! When we return, we will be launching Virtual School on April 6. Our teachers are eager to connect with their students again!
We will continue to communicate updates as we receive them. In the meantime, stay safe and thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Heather Golly

Technology Distribution!
In order to launch Virtual School, it is extremely important that all students have access to technology. Roosevelt will be distributing Chromebooks on April 6-8 (see schedule below). Please fill out the SURVEY BEFORE coming to pick up your Chromebook so that the drive-thru goes smoothly and so that wait times are lessened. Safety of our families and our staff members and social distancing is a primary concern, so please fill this out in advance.
Virtual School will launch on April 6, but it will take us a bit of time to support all students with getting connected. You can expect teachers to reach out to students via their school emails to invite them to their Google Classrooms starting April 6.
Virtual School- A Few More Details
When we return from Spring Break on Monday April 6th, students will pick up their normal classes remotely via Google Classroom with their own teachers. The teachers will be providing assignments, lessons, and/or projects through Google Classroom. Students will turn in their assignments through Google Classroom (or other means stated by teachers). Students, beginning April 6th need to be checking their email everyday and their Google Classrooms. Please be clear -- Students likely will not get something every day from every teacher. Different projects, activities, assignments will take different amounts of time. At this time, VUSD is asking teachers to not hold live conferencing sessions with students.
Students should co-create a schedule with you for when they will do school work, chores, and other activities. Routine is important in the lives of middle schoolers. Here is a sample SCHEDULE that we suggest.
8th Graders: This is their last year of middle school, and they had a lot to look forward to. The school closure "until further notice" makes it difficult to plan for the end of the year activities for them. Promotion is still set to proceed as scheduled at this time until we hear more.
High School Course Selections: We know that students and families are anxious about making sure all 8th Graders are able to get to select their high school courses accurately. We have been working closely with the high schools during this time to ensure that course selections still happen in a timely fashion. The deadlines for choosing classes for high school have been extended. We will be sending out comprehensive information for students walking through this process on Wednesday April 8th. All timelines, procedures, and directions will be provided to students, and we will also send the same information to parents. The high schools are working very hard to make sure this process is as easy to understand as possible.
7th Grade "Family Life/Sex Ed": At this point it looks like the state of California will postpone compliance with the state-mandated Family Life/Sex Ed curriculum for this year. We anticipate picking it up as part of 8th Grade Science.

Hello RMS Families! Anyone needing a School Counselor support and/or Social-Emotional resources in this difficult time is being directed to the “Counseling” page under the “Departments” dropdown on our RMS Website. We’ve created a short URL for easy sharing. bit.do/rooseveltcounseling (all lowercase). We have also created a “Student Support” slideshow for RMS families that has links to TONS of resources and links to fun stuff (CLICK HERE FOR SLIDESHOW). Lastly, Nancy and I have created a way for our students to request a virtual appointment with us. You can find it at bit.do/rmscheckin (all lowercase). It’s important students know they can make an appointment for themselves, or make an appointment to speak with us about another person they are concerned about!

PAWS of the Month: Responsibility
Middle school presents the ideal opportunity for our students to be more responsible and accountable for their actions. Roosevelt Middle School encourages students to think ahead and consider any potential consequences that may result from students’ behaviors. We encourage students to consider the impact they are having on others, themselves, and the environment.
