Junior Achievement Volunteer Awards
Osborne Middle School appreciates its partnership with the Junior Achievement Discovery Center at Gwinnett. Each year sixth and eighth grade students have the opportunity to attend the simulation experience at either Biztown or Finance Park to practice financial literacy skills that have been taught in the classroom. We are equally thankful for our parent involvement in this experience. Parents of our students can volunteer to attend as a mentor for our students as they run a business or try to manage a budget.
Because we have such supportive and amazing parents, Osborne Middle School recently received two awards from Junior Achievement for the 2018-19 school year. The first award is the 100 Club Award. This award is given to organizations or schools who brought 100+ volunteers with JA of Georgia Programs. The second award received is the Impact Award. This award is given to the top five organizations who brought the largest number of volunteers to each of our JA Discovery Centers.

Media Center News
Book Club
The Osborne Middle School Book Club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. We read and discuss the fifteen books that comprise the Gwinnett County Middle School Readers Rally list. We also have fun games and book-related activities in coordination with the Hamilton Mill Branch of the Gwinnett County Library. In late October or early November, we will select the OMS Readers Rally team from the students who participate in Book Club. If your student loves to read, please encourage him or her to join the OMS Book Club. It’s never too late to join. Our next meeting is Thursday, September 12, at 8:15 in the Media Center.
Summer Reading Celebration
On Thursday, August 29, we celebrated all of our readers who read more than the two required books over the summer. We had 97 students participate in our celebration, which is four times the number of students who participated last year. Students received goodie bags, gift certificates, and prizes based on the number of books read. Our top overall reader was eighth grader Danielle Chun, who read 84 books, and received a Kindle Fire and a $50 Amazon gift card to purchase more books. Our top readers in each grade level were Elizabeth Burke in eighth grade, who read 77 books; Alyssa Settles in seventh grade, who read 29 books; and Ben Hughes in sixth grade who read 25 books; they each received a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card. Honorable mentions were eighth graders Lucas Nguyen, who read 75 books, and Zoe Taratsas, who read 68 books; each of these students received a $15 Barnes and Noble gift card. Congratulations to all of the students who participated in our optional summer reading celebration. Thank you to Mr. Wells and the local businesses who donated prizes for our gathering: Barnes and Noble, Culver’s, Steak and Shake, Chili’s, Buffalo’s, Arby’s, and Zaxby’s. When you frequent these businesses, please thank them for their support.
2020 COGAT Testing
Eighth grade students will be participating in the 2019 administration of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) which measures students’ verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning abilities. The results of this test will help assess how well your child is performing and assist with plans to meet your child’s academic needs.
The administration will be delivered as follows:
· Monday, September 9, 2019: Verbal Battery - Sections 1, 2, & 3
· Tuesday, September 10, 2019: Quantitative Battery - Sections 4, 5, & 6
· Wednesday, September 11, 2019: Nonverbal Battery - Sections 7, 8, & 9
· Thursday, September 12 and Friday, September 13, 2019: Make-up Sessions
Thank you for making sure your child is present and on time each of these days. Our staff wants to provide your child with the best opportunity to be successful. Since the formal testing environment cannot be duplicated in a make-up session, it is to your child’s advantage to be at school during these scheduled test days. Once testing has begun each day, no child will be allowed to enter the classroom tardy. Although no studying or preparation is necessary for this test, the following recommendations should help your child do his/her best each day:
· Get plenty of rest
· Eat a healthy breakfast
· Be at school on time
· Be prepared (glasses if needed)
Thank you very much for encouraging and supporting your student during testing. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Tracey Halama, OMS Testing Coordinator, at 770-904-5400.
