Check out these descriptions of the four main coaching styles outlined by Kise (2017). Also, check out her book, Differentiated Coaching. Literacy coaches are engaged in a close study of this great resource in conjunction with their monthly cluster visits.
A Little Bit from Shelly
In October, our interventionists discussed the climate and culture priority metrics scorecard. During our discussion, we brainstormed ways that we support positive discipline, engagement, and attendance beyond what the school community does. In our small groups, it was challenging to separate what we do to increase engagement and decrease discipline. The interventionists felt that they go hand in hand.
Even though our interventionists have the opportunity to work in smaller groups and in 1:1 slots, their expertise shines bright in how they deliver their instruction that supports engagement and hopefully decreases discipline issues. Teaching within students’ ZPD is ideal because the learner can achieve more than what they would be able to accomplish without assistance and without frustrating the learner. In our Reading Recovery and CIM training, we describe that the reading and writing work that a student does should be “easy, easy, a little bit of work”. The learner and teacher should “feel” this rhythm. If we experience only hard or too much work, we often find ourselves not willing to continue to try. When we help our students see themselves as readers and writers and what they can do, we often see discipline decrease as engagement increases.
