Welcome to Gingerbread and Holiday Traditions Week!
This week in Language Arts/Social Studies, we celebrated Gingerbread/Holiday Traditions Week! Students did a fantastic job with all of our activities! Check out everything we did!

On Monday, we....
- Read "Olive, the other Reindeer" and students completed a writing about what they would do if they had a pet reindeer! These writings came home yesterday! Please enjoy them! Students did a great job!
- While students were completing their reindeer writings with Mrs. Schettone, other friends rotated through literacy centers reviewing our sight words, letters a-z, word building, and beginning, middle, and ending sounds!
- We learned about different Christmas Traditions that children and families all over the world celebrate by reading "Jingle Bells" and "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas."
On Tuesday, we....
- Read "The Gingerbread Man", "The Gingerbread Boy", and "The Gingerbread Girl." Students then completed a graphic organizer illustrating what they would look like if they were a gingerbread boy or girl. They also identified who they would run from and what their gingerbread house would look like!
- While students were completing their graphic organizers with Mrs. Schettone, other friends rotated through literacy centers reviewing our sight words, letters a-z, word building, Gingerbread Sequencing, and beginning, middle, and ending sounds!
- We learned about the holiday of Kwanzaa by reading "Santa's Kwanzaa". We learned that Kwanzaa lasts seven nights and they have a candle celebration just like Hanukkah, however, instead of a Menorah, their candle holder is called a Kinara! Each candle stands for the seven principles of the Kwanzaa holiday! This is a Swahili celebration!
On Wednesday, we....
- Read "The Gingerbread Baby". Students then completed a story map identifying the characters, setting, problem, and solution of the story!
- While students were completing their story maps with Mrs. Schettone, other friends rotated through literacy centers reviewing our sight words, letters a-z, word building, and beginning, middle, and ending sounds!
- We continued to learn about the holiday of Kwanzaa! We read "The Seven Candles for Kwanzaa" and learned about the different activities that they do each day of Kwanzaa celebrating their seven principles! Several of the activities that we learned they observe is a having a big feast celebrating a plentiful harvest, they learn to do something they have never done before, they work together to fix something that may have been broken in their house, they sing and dance, and the reflect on their past year and things they would like to achieve in the upcoming year!
On Thursday, we....
- Read "The Gingerbread Kid Goes to School" and then students worked with Mrs. Schettone on a writing where they explained what they would do first, second, and third in order to catch a gingerbread man!
- While students were completing their gingerbread writing with Mrs. Schettone, other friends rotated through literacy centers reviewing our sight words, letters a-z, word building, and beginning, middle, and ending sounds!
- We continued to learn about Christmas traditions! We read two versions of the Nutcracker to learn about the Legend of the Nutcracker! Students LOVED this magical tale!
On Friday, we....
- Read "The Gingerbread Cowboy", "The Gingerbread Pirates", and "The Gingerbread Mouse." Students continued to work with Mrs. Schettone on their "How to Catch a Gingerbread Man.." writing!
- While students were completing their gingerbread writing with Mrs. Schettone, other friends rotated through literacy centers reviewing our sight words, letters a-z, word building, and beginning, middle, and ending sounds!
- We learned about the holiday of Hanukkah today! During the holiday of Hanukkah last week, we read several books learning about the holiday of Hanukkah including "Lots of Latkes", "Light the Lights", "I have a Little Dreidel", "The Magic Dreidles", and "The Eight Nights of Hanukkah." Today, we observed one of the Hanukkah traditions in class and made potato latkes! Students got to try them with applesauce and sour cream!
Star Sailor James!
This week, we got to learn a lot about our Star Sailor James! Check out a little bit about him!
- On Monday, James shared his All About Me Poster! We learned that he wants to be a truck driver when he grows up, his favorite animal is a lion, and his favorite food is pizza!
- On Tuesday, James shared his favorite book, "TMNT T-Machine Turbo Guide!"
- On Wednesday, James shared his favorite song, "Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars!
- On Thursday, James shared his favorite snack, cupcakes!
- On Friday, we made James a special book for his Star Sailor Week!

What did we do in Math this week??
We continued to learn about composing and decomposing numbers to 10! We also reviewed past concepts in our math centers! Check out what we did!
- We learned to compose and decompose numbers 8, 9, and 10 and completed these lessons in our math workbook!
- In centers, we practiced composing numbers 8 and 9 by completing a shake and spill activity, we tied in our study of gingerbread by completing a gingerbread identification and graphing activity, students reviewed showing numbers 10-20 on a ten frame, students completed a journal activity, and students worked on the ipad and computer practicing various math skills and coding!
- Our Winter Concert will be on Tuesday, December 22nd at 6:30pm
- Our Holiday Cookie Decorating Party will be on Wednesday, December 23rd! Students may dress down in their PJs today! Please visit this link to donate an item for our Holiday Cookie Party: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0f4fa8ab2daa8-cbacookie
- Our Class Book Exchange will be on Wednesday, December 23rd! Please remember to send in a book, gift wrapped, with your child's name on the tag! Please do not spend more than $5 on the book and it must be a book appropriate for a girl or boy! You may send this in at any time! Thank you so much!
- School will be closed for Winter Break December 24th-January 3rd! Happy Holidays!
