"In 5th grade science, kids are mad, Mad, MAD! Mostly because being a mad scientist is harder than the movies let on. I mean, come on! Have you ever seen a mad scientist weighing baking soda (don't forget to subtract the weight of the cup) and then recording data? Anywho, be sure to ask your student about weighing ingredients before and after chemical reactions. Did the weight go up, stay the same, or go down? Why? Was matter lost? (The weight went down. Besides evaporation, we are still trying to uncover why we lost weight after the chemical reaction. Was matter lost? Hard to say right now. We need more testing! What does your student think?)
One interesting question is: Can you recover the original ingredients after a chemical reaction? Also, if the reaction kept happening, would the weight eventually go all the way to zero?
Maybe we'll find out as we move our way through "Matter Mystery Hotline!""
Music
Students in music are learning foundational music skills through fun and engaging games and performing as an ensemble! Specifically, K-2 is working on matching pitch and playing non-pitched percussion, and 3-5 are exploring non-pitched percussion, pitched percussion, melodic instruments and ensemble singing!
