Cottonwood's Staff would like to Wish Everyone a Very Happy College Kickoff Month
Greetings Cottonwood Families
I can’t believe we already have one trimester in the books. I am still getting to know our scholars, staff, and families and I truly am enjoying my time here even with these tumultuous times.
This month has been a busy month with the principal being taped to a wall to top it all off. We have also completed our second round of the Reading Inventory Assessment, please talk with your child about their scores and how much they have improved since the last test. The Reading Lexile Score is an indicator of College and Career Readiness and we should see a growth of 75 points per Semester or 150 points per year. Our goal 1 on our School Plan for Student Success as a site this year is that every child will increase their Lexile Score by 150 points.
October’s Character Focus is Self-Control, this means choosing what to do right, even when you don’t feel like it. Encourage your children by noticing “little things” that reflect good character. Don’t overlook opportunities to recognize your children for self-control when they sit still, act calm instead of being wild, use an “indoor voice” inside, walk in the house instead of running, or walk away from a conflict instead of fighting. Praise your children this month when you see them showing self-control.
Coming November 5th we are having our Fall Festival. I encourage you all to come out and with family and friends to have fun and help raise money for our PTO. I will also be there to enjoy the company of our great community and be the victim of a water dunking device (Another PTO scheme to raise money). I hope to see you all there.
I hope you all have a great October. Please feel free to reach out to me if you need anything.
Mr. Trudel

For the month of October, Cottonwood will focus on the Character Trait of Self Control. The word Self-Control combines the Old English seolf with the Latin contra rotulus, which mean "against a roll." Just as a driver steers a car in the right direction by controlling the steering wheel, a person shows self-control by steering his or her actions in the right direction. Imagine riding in a car that is out of control. It can be frightening and very dangerous! This is also true for people who are out of control. They can hurt themselves and other people. Self-Control is like having steering and brakes in the journey of life. It means saying "no" to some things in order to say "yes" to something better. In order to help us reinforce Self-Control feel free to send in pictures of your child demonstrating Self-Control to (aniaves@hemetusd.org) so that we can celebrate their efforts.
